SEVERN, MD - An ex-boyfriend shot his former girlfriend and then took his own life Saturday in a Severn barricade, police said.
Officers expect the woman to survive.
Authorities identified the now-deceased man as 59-year-old Kenneth Saulsbury of Severn.
Police said they responded to a shooting in the 1800 block of Blue Jay Court around 10:20 a.m.
Officers said they found the injured 55-year-old woman who said her ex-boyfriend shot her and was still inside her home.
A barricade ensued, police said.
Officers announced the shooting and asked the public to avoid the area at 11:21 a.m.
Authorities said they unsuccessfully tried to contact the suspect.
Police said they then entered the home and found that the suspect had taken his own life.
Officers announced the end of the barricade at 1:38 p.m.
The injured woman was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, authorities said.
"It's very unfortunate. Stuff like this usually doesn't happen here," a neighborhood resident identified only as Keonya told WJZ. "I've been here over 20 years. It's fairly quiet, a pretty good community."
