HANOVER, MD — A karate instructor was arrested on child sex offense charges in Anne Arundel County, police announced Monday.

Officers identified the suspect as 71-year-old Harry Craig Conaway of Hanover.

Authorities said they launched the investigation earlier this month after hearing about "repeated incidents of sexual abuse spanning a period of several months involving a karate instructor and a child."

Police said the offenses happened in and near a storage shed converted into a dojo on the suspect's Hanover property, where he held private karate lessons.

Officers said they executed a search and seizure warrant at Conaway's home.

Authorities said Conaway faces 28 charges including:

  • Sex offense of a minor
  • Second-degree rape
  • Third-degree sex offense
  • Fourth-degree sex offense
  • Second-degree assault
  • Perverted practice
  • Private place prurient intent

The Anne Arundel County Police Department is still investigating, even though it already made an arrest.

Officers said nothing currently suggests that there are other victims.

Authorities asked anybody with information to call (410) 222-4733. Tipsters can stay anonymous by dialing (410) 222-4700.
