The Powerball jackpot for Saturday's drawing has been raised to become what would be the third-largest jackpot prize in American history. Due to strong sales, the jackpot for Saturday was raised from $475 million to $550 million, with a $350.1 million cash option. It is the second largest prize in Powerball's history. No ticket has had the winning numbers for the past 13 drawings—since early April, according to a Maryland Lottery press release. Maryland has had two winning Powerball tickets since the Maryland Lottery joined the game in 2010. One was a Pennsylvania couple who purchased a ticket in Elkton on Christmas Eve in 2011 that won them $128.8 million. The Maryland Live! casino in Hanover saw revenue increase by more than 16 percent in March, while the two other casinos in the state saw similar gains. Maryland Live!, the state's largest casino with more than 4,100 slot machines, saw revenue rise from $38,335,308 to $44,613,545. The Maryland Lottery reported $56,582,630 in slots revenue statewide during March, up from $47,767,536 in February. In addition, the Hollywood Casino in Perryville reported $1,465,763 in revenue from table games introduced in March. Table games will be introduced at Maryland Live! later this month. Revenue at the Maryland Live! casino was essentially flat between December and January, despite the first full month of 24-hour operations. The casino pulled in $35,943,756.19 in January, a decline of just under $100,000 from December. Casino revenue across the state dropped by about $900,000, as the state’s three casinos brought in $44.3 million combined. Maryland Live! is by far the largest casino with 4,750 machines. The casino in Anne Arundel County received approval this week for more than 500 new machines that include electronic table games.
The Maryland Live! casino, which opened in June with more than 3,000 slot machines and electronic table games, continued to expand its offerings this week. The Maryland Lottery announced Thursday that it tested and approved 531 additional slot machines and electronic table games at the casino located at Arundel Mills in Hanover. Patch previously reported that more than 1,500 machines would be added by the fall. The Maryland Lottery reported its 15th consecutive year of sales growth, helped along by interest from the $656 million jackpot in March.
A record-setting Mega Millions jackpot helped pace the Maryland Lottery to a record of its own, with the agency reporting a 4.7 percent increase in sales over the previous fiscal year. The lottery said Monday that figures from fiscal year 2012 showed the 15th consecutive year of sales growth, despite greater competition from casinos and a dearth of new retail outlets. The lottery generated $1.795 billion in sales during fiscal year 2012, up $80.4 million from the year prior. Those sales translated into $556 million into Maryland’s general fund and $1.066 billion in prizes awarded to players.
