Amanda Edmonds, who most recently served as assistant principal at Nantucket Elementary School, said she hopes to keep alive the school's tradition of excellence.
For Amanda Edmonds, there has never been any question about where education stood in her list of priorities. The Baltimore native was drawn to a career in teaching and administration as far back as high school, and it has landed her at Waugh Chapel Elementary School in Odenton. Edmonds started her first week as the new principal there this week. “I was definitely excited, and that feeling has still remained,” she said. “Being a principal of a school has always been something I’ve aspired to do. When the opportunity finally presented itself, I think I was just overwhelmed.” Edmonds comes to Waugh Chapel from Nantucket Elementary School, where she served as assistant principal. With the help of a college intern, students have learned lessons in tap, hip-hop and other dance styles during their physical education classes.
At Waugh Chapel Elementary School, gym class became a little more than kickball and jumping rope this winter. Students channeled their inner Fred Astaires and Ginger Rogers, with comprehensive lessons on dance, including hip-hop, tap and ballet. They even got to participate in a county dance festival and perform at a local college basketball game. Physical education teacher Karen Webster said the inspiration for the dance units came from her college intern this winter, who is head of the dance team at UMBC. Meghan Alokonis, a senior at the college, sheepishly admitted to Webster one day that her background was in dance, not traditional physical education. Webster saw it as an opportunity. “I said ‘well, we can do dance in PE ... dance is …

There was merriment all over Odenton on Saturday, with holiday fairs and special visits from Santa Claus. Patch was on hand to enjoy the fun.
Saturday was a busy day around Odenton, with holiday cheer at several locations. We started the day at the Lunch With Santa Event at the Odenton Volunteer Fire Co. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus had a great time with scores of youngsters, who also enjoyed a puppet show. It was also a packed house at the Waugh Chapel Elementary School Holiday Craft and Vendor Fair. Santa made an appearance there and posed for pictures, and there were lots of goodies for sale. There was also a silent auction with some great items up for bid. In the afternoon, we hit the official Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Babington Green. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by fire truck, and treated town residents to some Christmas music, cookies and cocoa before lighting the…
