Rieve's Store Re-Opens Monday

The store had operated from a temporary location while its historic building was moved to accommodate the new Walgreens.

The Rieve's store in Odenton is expected to be back open in its historic building Monday. The store, which had been operating from a temporary location for about six months, is back in its original building, now located behind the new Walgreens. The Rieve's building was literally picked up and moved in April to make space for the new drug store. It's now possible to access Rieve's by going through the driveway between Walgreens and the Odenton Ace Hardware, or from a driveway off Odenton Road. The Rieve's store, now owned by Sunny Patel, has been of great interest to historians in Odenton. The store was opened in the 1930s and operated by Werner Charles Rieve. It was a popular place for workers in Odenton to go and grab some coffee and …

Walgreens on Piney Orchard Parkway Now Open

The long-awaited drugstore is ready for customers.

After watching months of construction work, residents of Odenton can now shop at the new Walgreens store.  The pharmacy on Piney Orchard Parkway opened for business last week and is the newest retailer in the Odenton Town Center.  The store opening means the end of disruptive construction work next to the Odenton Ace Hardware, and soon the Rieve's Deli will be open again for business in the back of the site. (If you recall, the historic Rieve's building was moved to accommodate the Walgreens.) Walgreens is accessible from Piney Orchard Parkway and from Odenton Road.  I went in to pick up a couple items on Monday morning. My purchases: a Starbucks Frappuccino drink and some rubber bands.  I was struck by how spacious the store is.  …

New Driveway Nearly Complete for Walgreens, Rieve's

Area residents can now see how they'll park and navigate around the two stores on Piney Orchard Parkway.

For the last few months, it's been hard to tell how the new Walgreens will co-exist with the Rieve's Deli behind it and the Odenton Ace Hardware just to the south.  But now we can see the driveway and parking area for the stores is now nearly complete. There's some space in the front of Walgreens to park, then a long, wide driveway to the back of the site, where Rieve's sits.  Meanwhile, Odenton Ace Hardware will have a second entrance point on Piney Orchard Parkway, and customers will be able to get to all of the businesses from Odenton Road.  The Walgreens and Rieve's are expected to open by the end of October.  See also:

Please tell me that they are going to have a right turn only sign coming out of that parking lot? If not traffic is going to be a nightmare especially around P.M. rush hour.   more ›

Lots of Activity at Walgreens Site

If you go by the area near Odenton Ace Hardware and the new Walgreens, keep an eye out for traffic delays and work crews.

There's a flurry of activity on Piney Orchard Parkway near the site of the new Walgreens. Work crews are busy on final construction of the new drug store, and are also working on road improvements in front. It's important to know that Odenton Ace Hardware next door is open for business, and it's possible to access the store from both Piney Orchard Parkway and Odenton Road. The right lane of Piney Orchard Parkway was closed in the area on Wednesday. Keep an eye out for work crews and vehicles moving in and out of the site.

We'd like to know which of Odenton's ongoing projects is most intriguing to you.

There's a lot of construction going on in Odenton. We reported earlier Wednesday that the new Walgreens on Piney Orchard Parkway is well underway. There are also apartment complexes under construction on Telegraph Road, on Annapolis Road and near the MARC station. Plus, there's a Patient First center coming along at the Odenton Gateway site, along with a major medical office building. Which of these is most exciting to you? Vote in our poll and leave a comment below.

Walgreens Construction Underway

The new drug store on Piney Orchard Parkway is taking shape.

Now that the Rieve's Deli has been moved aside, construction of the Walgreens on Piney Orchard Parkway has started in earnest. It's now possible to see the frame of the building and steel going up, and there is heavy construction equipment, including cement mixers, on site. Walgreens said the store should be open by the end of the summer. Patch previously reported that the Rieve's Deli building was literally picked up and moved to the west of the Walgreens site. That, too, will re-open later this year.

All developers are required to make improvements to roads commensurate with the traffic impact of their projects. The traffic increases you're seeing are a result of the growth that's occurring throughout our economy - including a 60% increase in employment at Ft. Meade over the last five years for which no improvements can be required by the State - not just from the local development.   more ›

Top 5 Stories of the Week

It was a busy week in Odenton and Severn. Here are our picks for the most interesting stories.

Last week was pretty jam-packed with news and events. In case you missed something, here's a rundown of my favorite stories from the week, as judged by newsworthiness and reader feedback. Buzzer Beater in Millersville—The Arundel High boys basketball team had a perfect record going into its game against Old Mill on Tuesday. But the dream of an unblemished season ended as Old Mill scored the game-winning basket as time expired.  Franchot Blasts the Democrats—Peter Franchot, the comptroller of the state of Maryland, is a Democrat. And he spoke Thursday at the 33rd District Democratic Club in Odenton. But that didn't prevent him from issuing sharp words toward his own party on the issues of taxation and spending. Fatal Crash on Route 3—It …

Preparations for Walgreens Store Begin

Construction crews are hard at work behind Rieve's Deli on Piney Orchard Parkway. The Rieve's building will be moved, and a new drug store will take its place.

If you've stopped into the Rieve's Deli on Piney Orchard Parkway recently, you probably noticed that there's a lot of construction work going on nearby. Site work has begun on the future Walgreens to be located there and the Rieve's building will be transplanted to the southeast to face Odenton Road. The county approved the plans in late 2010 that also call for the construction of a pole barn garage for Eastern Excavation, which owns some of the land in question. The Rieve's building will be kept intact, because it is considered historic. While construction is ongoing, Rieve's will be temporarily moved to a location to the north, near the Western District police station, county spokeswoman Tracie Reynolds said. A Walgreens spokesman said …
