The governor's proposed budget would funnel $20 million to complete intersection improvements along Route 175, the Maryland Gazette reports.
Plans to relieve congestion along Route 175 will get a boost under the latest budget proposal from Gov. Martin O'Malley, the Maryland Gazette reports. The proposal includes $20 million for the State Highway Administration to fund intersection improvements near Fort Meade. Several of the projects have already been through design and engineering work, but still lacked funds for construction. The projects, according to the Gazette, include intersections on Route 175 at Mapes Road/Charter Oaks Boulevard, and Route 175 at Reece Road. The budget also includes some money for additional studies on traffic flow in the area. Robert Leib, the county's special assistant for base realignment and closure activities at Fort Meade, told Patch that he …

Free gambling Wednesday caused highways around Arundel Mills to turn into parking lots, according to drivers.
Drivers on Routes 100 and 295 were slowed to a crawl by Arundel Mills Wednesday around lunchtime, if they were lucky. Maryland Live! casino, located in Hanover, rang in the announcement of more than 1,000 additional slot machines by offering $100 in free gambling money to subscribers on its email list. More than 20,000 visitors came to the casino on Wednesday, according to Carmen Gonzales, Maryland Live! spokeswoman, who did not specify how many visitors the casino averaged daily. On opening night, the casino attracted more than 10,000 visitors. Route 100 near 295 was "an absolute nightmare," posted one user to Twitter on Sept. 12. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway "was a parking lot around noon," commented Patch user Brian C. that same day…

The long wait for the traffic light at Dairy Farm and Annapolis Roads will soon be over. On Sept. 17, the State Highway Administration will begin blinking yellow lights on Annapolis Road and a red light on Dairy Farm Road, spokesman David Buck said. Buck said the light will then be fully operational on Sept. 20. He said the three-day flash period is mandatory, and will give motorists a chance to get used to the light being there.

Police said they found a Jessup man stealing copper wire from a State Highway Administration shed in Hanover.
Anne Arundel County police arrested a Jessup man Thursday after they said he tampered with a traffic signal system at an intersection in Hanover. Police said they responded shortly before 7 p.m., initially due to a report that someone was hurt at the corner of Telegraph Road and Dorsey Road. When officers arrived on scene, they found Matthew Dale Mitchell, 27, standing near a traffic control shed owned by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA). Police said they saw a large amount of copper cable lying on the ground near him. According to police, Mitchell told the officers he was fixing the signal systems, but officers said they doubted this claim because he was wearing a T-shirt, jean shorts, white socks and flip flops. Police …

Anyone who's driven by Dairy Farm and Annapolis roads will have no doubt seen the main infrastructure in place for a new traffic light there. The light will affect traffic heading from Dairy Farm onto Annapolis Road, and could be operational by the end of the month, the State Highway Administration (SHA) said. The SHA said it will begin conducting field tests and coordinating with BGE on connecting electricity to the light. SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar said there will be a three-day period in which the lights will flash yellow, in order to alert motorists that a light has been installed. This light is designed to help make it easier to make a left onto Annapolis Road from Dairy Farm Road, especially during rush hour.

The opening of Maryland Live! casino at Arundel Mills will create a "high volume of traffic along MD 100 and MD 295 through this weekend," according to the State Highway Administration (SHA). Improvements to the MD 295 interchange at Arundel Mills Boulevard are still under construction and will be completed early next week, according to the SHA. Until then, SHA advises using these routes:

In the first installment of Patch's series reviewing traffic problems in the area, we analyze the roundabout at Annapolis and Sappington Station roads in Odenton.
There are few things that get folks more riled up than traffic circles. For whatever reason, people seem to have a love/hate relationship with them. The traffic circle on Annapolis Road in Odenton has gotten some attention in the last year due to a change in design, as well as increasing traffic stemming from nearby development. There is a lot going on at this roundabout. There are cars coming from both directions on Annapolis Road, so you have a lot of traffic coming from the west toward Gambrills and from people coming from the east into Odenton. It's also the connector to Sappington Station Road, which feeds into the Lions Gate development and Shelter Cove apartments and directs people to Maryland Route 32. On top of that, Odenton Road …

Drivers heading into or out of Arundel Mills from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway will experience a new "diverging diamond" configuration.
The State Highway Administration (SHA) is starting work this week on a new traffic pattern designed to accommodate drivers into and out of Arundel Mills. The SHA plans to install a “diverging diamond” pattern at the interchange of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Arundel Mills Boulevard, replacing the current traffic circles. Work on the new pattern will result in temporary detours for drivers coming southbound on the parkway into Arundel Mills. The new pattern—which will be the first of its kind in Maryland—could be at least partially completed in time for when the Maryland Live! casino opens at Arundel Mills on June 6. The project is being funded with $5 million from The Cordish Cos., the casino developer. But officials said the …

If you haven't noticed, it's getting harder and harder to get around town these days. There's construction work on Maryland Route 175 and Maryland Route 170. There's a growing line of cars going and in and out of the MARC station. There are rush hour backups near Fort Meade and Seven Oaks. What's the worst spot for you in the Odenton and Severn area? Over the next couple of months, we'll be taking a look at traffic concerns and highlighting a new tough spot each week. I have some choices of my own, but I'm looking for nominees. At the end of this whole project, I'll post a poll, and we'll officially announce the worst traffic headache in the community. Tell me in the comments where the worst traffic headache is, what time of day it's most …

The work will take place during overnight hours later this spring and summer.
Maryland Route 32 will be resurfaced later this spring and summer, and will have new stripes painted on the busy road. The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) said the re-paving will take place between Maryland Route 198 and Maryland Route 175. The SHA said work will take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday beginning later this spring, and is scheduled for completion in June. Crews will resurface the shoulders and main road, and will re-stripe the lanes and shoulders. Reliable Contracting of Millersville will carry out the project after winning a $1.6 million contract. About 53,000 cars travel on this stretch of Route 32 each day, the SHA said.

This money has been 'allocated' time and time again. This should have been done ages ago. The money WAS in the transportation funding pot. But instead the state diverted it to something 'more worthy'. The $20M (if it even exists) will be diverted again. I believe nothing the governor says. I believe nothing our state government says. West County has been and will continue to be where the governor…   more ›
