Frigid Friday Moved to Feb. 1 for Local Student Plungers

Students from Arundel, South River and other local high schools will plunge alone on Feb. 1.

Anne Arundel County Public School students will have their own day to plunge in this year's Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge. All other participating schools in Maryland will plunge on Jan. 25 but, due to exams, Anne Arundel County students' day in the water was rescheduled—they will plunge on Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m. Students from Arundel High and South River High have historically been among the top fundraisers for the event, which directs proceeds to Special Olympics Maryland.  Arundel High School students led the state by raising more than $40,000 with its 469 plungers. South River High School came in second in the state by raising $33,930 with 301 team members.  The annual Plungefest, hosted by the Maryland State Police, helps to …

Local Groups Prepare for 2013 Polar Bear Plunge

Students from Arundel High are looking to raise $50,000 as they take part in the 17th annual plunge where participants run into the chilly Chesapeake Bay. The event will take place on Jan. 25 and 26 at Sandy Point State Park.

Before you know it, 2013 will be here and so will the annual Maryland State Police (MSP) Polar Bear Plunge. Each year, thousands take a quick dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland. The Plungefest, which is open to the public, is set for Jan. 26, 2013, at Sandy Point State Park. Frigid Friday for participating schools will take place the day before the Plungefest. Arundel High School has historically been one of the top groups in terms of participants and fundraising, and has already set up a fundraising page.   Last year, the school raised more than $40,000 and has set a goal of $50,000 this year. South River High students have set up their own a fundraising page, dubbing themselves the "SnoHawks." Last …
