New Orleans Kitchen Will Not Re-Open

The restaurant closed last December and owners had been looking for new partners.

It's official: the New Orleans Kitchen and French Market is gone.   Owners said the eatery, which enjoyed a short but popular run in its spot on Telegraph Road in Severn, will not re-open. The restaurant had stopped operating last December but owners had indicated they were seeking new financial partners.  The New Orleans Kitchen only opened in May of last year with New Orleans native Rusty Evers manning the kitchen along with several family members. It became well-known in the area for its po' boy sandwiches, gumbo and beans and rice. Last fall, it launched a special Saturday breakfast menu with fried chicken and waffles, beignets and cafe au lait.  Operators formally announced the closure on the restaurant's Facebook page Wednesday. Here…

A Touch of Italy for Your Pets

Sisters Gina Wortz and Sharlee Fleshman have combined their love of pets with their love of Italy in forming the online store "Dog Italia."

Gina Wortz and Sharlee Fleshman are of Italian descent. They come from a long line of entrepreneurs. And they both love animals. So it was a natural fit when the sisters decided to go into business together, launching an online store featuring pet-related products with an Italian theme. Dog Italia offers a series of healthy and organic treats for dogs and cats. There's a peanut butter canoli for dogs, for example and tiny biscottis. (A biscotti for your scottie, perhaps?) And the pair sell a host of other products designed to spoil pets and their owners. They are the real deal. Their maiden name is Castricone, and they proudly descend tout their ancestral roots from the Abruzzo region of Italy. "We just wanted to go back to our Italian …

Bawk! Bawk! Chicks Arrive in Gambrills

The Gambrills General Store now has hundreds of baby chickens on sale for customers looking for fresh and local eggs.

Hundreds of baby chicks arrived in Gambrills on Friday, ready for customers looking to raise fresh eggs in their own backyards.  More than 300 chicks are now on sale at the Gambrills General Store. They come in 10 varieties, and have become a popular item in recent years.  Store co-owner Janet Garmen said the chicks were shipped overnight from Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. She expects the chicks will be sold quickly; last year, the store sold more than 2,000 chicks.  Eventually, the chicks will grow and lay eggs, which have become popular among families looking for something free, free and local.  If you are considering buying some chicks but aren't sure what you need, Garmen offers the following pieces of advice. What does it take to get …

My daughter & I stopped by the store yesterday to see them. They're adorable & we are thinking about getting a couple. We'll stop by today with my husband to look again. Since we know absolutely nothing about raising chickens, we'll need lots of time to research, but the people at the General Store are very helpful.   more ›

The new group of independent business owners is looking for new members.

A new group of local independent business owners is looking to grow its membership and will hold an open house next week.  TradeNet, which includes many business owners in west Anne Arundel County, will hold the event at the Gambrills General Store on Monday from 6-7:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome, but the group is specifically seeking sole proprietors or managers of independent businesses.  TradeNet was created last year as a way for independent business owners to share ideas, offer support and to collaborate on community service activities. New Orleans Kitchen Remains Closed, Seeks New Partner

The restaurant has been closed since late December. It is seeking a new partner before re-opening.

Fans of the New Orleans Kitchen and French Market in Severn have been waiting patiently for the restaurant to re-open after a holiday break.  They may have to keep waiting for their dose of po' boys and bread pudding. Restaurant officials said this week that they will not open the doors again until they have secured another partner to assist in growing the business. The restaurant closed in December, explaining that owners were simply spending the holidays with family in New Orleans. "We know that a lot of you are loyal patrons at our little restaurant and must be wondering when we are planning to reopen," officials said on the restaurant Facebook page. "As of yet, we haven't been able set a date." The restaurant said it was seeking an …

Mamma Roma's Launches New Website, Facebook Page

The restaurant in Piney Orchard has upgraded its web presence.

Mamma Roma's, the popular Italian restaurant in Piney Orchard, recently upgraded its presence on the Web.  The restaurant now has a new website and Facebook page, with updates on specials and discounts. There are also plenty of photos of great Italian food (and customers enjoying it.) Mamma Roma's web upgrade comes as one of its competitors, Italian Market, closed in the Village at Waugh Chapel.  Now that Italian Market is closed, do you plan to eat more often at Mamma Roma?

For every time went to the Italian Market we went to Mama Roma's 6 times. Consistently great food make by the owners and "Mama" at the register is fantastic! I'm actually glad to see them closed on Mondays and they had to have been putting in 100 hour weeks.   more ›
