Fresh Produce for Sale on Patuxent Road

A local family-owned farm is selling vegetables, fruit and herbs grown on 27 acres at the south end of Odenton.

Patrick Padilla doesn't have to travel far to find the vegetables he sells at the stand alongside Patuxent Road in Odenton.  He can just turn around and pick them from the field behind him.  Padilla has been operating Home Grown Produce for most of the summer, offering locally grown vegetables, including corn, cucumbers, peppers, plus a big crop of tomatoes and herbs.  Soon, he'll be selling pumpkins, squash and some other fall goods.  "It's been going really good," Padilla said. "Every day we're getting more people to slow down and stop in. The word is getting out, and a lot of our customers are happy about what we have." The farm is owned by Robert Pumphrey, the uncle of Padilla's girlfriend. The farm once sold vegetables under a …

Small Business Owners Form Group to Share Ideas

TradeNet features some of the most recognizable independent businesses in town. It will meet twice monthly at the Gambrills General Store.

Small business owners in Odenton, Severn and Gambrills have formed a new group to help share ideas, get advice and give back to the community. TradeNet meets twice monthly at the Gambrills General Store, and features several of the most recognizable small businesses in the area. Its next meeting is Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. "There are no chains or franchises ... these are truly local, small business owners," said Greg Mazzella, owner of Mazzella Investigative Solutions, and one of the group's founders. "Because the area is growing, we want to have a voice in everything that’s going on.” Meetings are informal, and there is no elected leadership, Mazzella said. Recent topics of conversation have included the impact of new apartment developments …

July's Top 5: Derecho, Development and Deadly Fire

Here's a look at the top stories for the month of the July in Odenton, Severn and the surrounding area.

Wow, what a busy month. We entered July recovering from a major storm, and there were plenty of news stories to follow. Here's a look at the biggest stories of the month in Odenton and Severn. The Two Rivers Story We'll be writing about this for a while. Developers want to build 2,060 homes down near the south edge of Odenton. They also say they'll build a new elementary school. And Evergreen Road may also get extended. It's a complex story with a lot of moving pieces. Pay attention to upcoming meetings with the Piney Orchard Community Association and the school board, among other groups. Berries, Brie and More at 'Bear's'

The new Bear's Honeypot store opened Saturday and Patch swung by to check out all the locally produced items.

I had a chance to stop by the new Bear's Honeypot store on Saturday for its grand opening, and sampled the unique selection of cheese, vegetables, jams and other items. A lively crowd gathered at the store despite a heavy rainfall to welcome owner Barret Lang to the Odenton business community. Bear's is advertised as the place to go for specialty items made by local farmers and producers. "We're going to have stuff that no one else has," Lang said as he greeted new customers. "I don't think there's any other store around like this, where it's all local." There was marina sauce from Randallstown, Delmonico steaks from Pennsylvania, and blueberry flavored honey produced by monks from Berryville, VA. (Blueberry honey? I didn't even know that …

Poll: Do You Buy Local?

Do you make a conscious attempt to support small and local producers?

Area residents seem to be excited about the news that Bear's Honeypot will open in Odenton next month, offering a place to buy locally-produced food and other items. The news comes as the Piney Orchard Farmers Market gets ready to open on Wednesday, with hours from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. So there should be plenty of chances to support local farmers and other producers. Advocates say buying local is often better for communities because money stays where it's spent. The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce has a "Buy Local" initiative and many businesses in the area have pushed residents to frequent small and independent stores. Do you make a conscious decision to shop local? Vote in our poll, and leave a comment below.

What is considered "local?" A nation? A state? A city? Town? Community? Street? House? Let's say we're talking about honey. If you feel good about buying honey from someone across town, would you feel even better if you could buy honey from someone on your street? If so, should you produce your own honey so that you can feel even better about it (and thus spend your money even closer to home!)?   more ›

'Bear's Honeypot' to Specialize in Small, Local

The new specialty store will sell cheese, vegetables and other goods from producers in the local area.

For more than a decade, Barret Lang has worked to help local food producers sell their products at farmers markets around the area. Now, he’s giving them a permanent retail outlet, with a new specialty store to open in Odenton later this year. Lang will open Bear’s Honeypot next month, offering a place to buy locally grown produce and items including cheeses, pastas and jams. The store will be located in the Stone Circle complex on Odenton Road, near the traffic circle. “We’re going to be really focused on the small producers,” he said. “Pretty much any product made locally, we’ll have it for you.” Lang, a Crofton native and 2003 graduate of South River High School, said he developed an interest in food after working in the produce section…

5 Local Spots for Valentine's Day Gifts

There's less than a week until Valentine's Day, but the good news is that there are plenty of places nearby with great gifts for sale.

If you want to do something more than buy flowers for your loved one on Feb. 14, there are plenty of places you can go locally to pick up that special  gift. From custom gift baskets to fine jewelry, you should be able to find something nice for your significant other. Here are five local places I recommend for Valentine's Day gift shopping. Pat’s Hallmark Shop—Of course, this is the place to go for cards. But there’s also a great selection of small gifts like stuffed animals, music boxes and pewter pendants. If you buy three cards, you can get a stuffed, singing monkey for just $14.95. Nothing says “I love you” like a singing monkey. 660 Chapel Lake Dr., Gambrills 410-451-9110 Gambrills General Store—This locally owned shop has a wide …
