Quarterfield Students Partake in 'Back to Football' NFL Event

In an effort to receive additional funding for the PE and Health Department, faculty and students gathered to show their commitment to living a healthy and active lifestyle.

The dew had just begun to dry when fourth graders of Quarterfield Elementary took the field Thursday morning to partake in the school’s “Back to Football” event. Throughout the day, students ranging from pre-K to 5th grade kicked, caught and punted footballs as the school encouraged active lifestyles, using the return of the NFL season as the catalyst for physical fitness. While living an active lifestyle has always been key for faculty and students at Quarterfield Elementary, Principal Jennifer Green saw a unique chance when she was notified of an opportunity to partner with the NFL. The partnership gave Green a chance to get up to $15,000 in grant money. As a part of NFL’s "Play 60" program, the league is accepting submissions from …

Quarterfield Elementary Reading Initiative Gets $500 Boost

A first grade teacher, Alyssa Wiles, received the money from the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County's Grants4Teachers award.

A new initiative that encourages first graders at Quarterfield Elementary to read 100 books in a year received a boost last month after the school received a $500 grant from the 2011 Grants4Teachers award. The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County managed the grant that goes out twice a year to educators who request additional funding. “Teachers apply for the grant with a project they want to do in their school," said Jan Hoffberger, program director for the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (CFAAC). "It needs to be a project they can’t get funded through their normal school budget. A lot of the time, these projects are things the teachers do out of their own pocket.” At Quarterfield Elementary, the money went toward …

Quarterfield Elementary Math Night Draws Parents Into PTA Participation

Children and parents gather together to play games and reinforce critical skills

The Quarterfield Elementary PTA hosted its second Math Night this Thursday, drawing a crowd of parents and children interested in the intersection between games and mathematics. Tables ringed the school’s cafeteria and each had a separate math-based game. Children played Mancala, constructed designs with blocks or marshmallows and toothpicks, or used the school’s Smartboard to play interactive math-themed computer games. “We thought it was really important to have family activities that support the curriculum” said PTA president Katie Frank, who will soon conclude her two year term as PTA president. Parent participation has grown from around 80 to over 130 parents actively involved during her tenure. That increase may well be the result of…

Quarterfield Book Fair Kicks Off

In a continued effort to increase the media and technology capabilities of the school, the elementary school is hosting its Fall Book Fair, open to students and parents.

In a partnership with Scholastic, Quarterfield Elementary and the PTA is hosting its Fall Scholastic Book Fair to help get children excited about reading and raise funds for future facility endeavors. "Each class comes through the week during their media center class time, and they can purchase anything from paperback easy reading, to adult books, such as cookbooks," said PTA Secretary Denise Rosebury.  Prices start at $3.99 for small paperback books and increase depending on the quality and genre of the piece of literature. "It's great because someone can come in with a $5 bill and buy something off the shelf," said Rosebury.  The school received six cases of foldable shelves, each containing a multitude of reading material. The shelves, …

Quarterfield Elementary Fundraiser Seeks to Increase School's Technology

As one of the older elementary schools in the county, Quarterfield Elementary and its PTA is working hard to bring projectors to every classroom within its walls.

Quarterfield Elementary's PTA hosted its monthly Chick-Fil-A fundraiser Wednesday night in an effort to advance the technological capabilities of the school. Students and families committed enough to brave the frantic parking situation at the Chick-Fil-A off Quarterfield Road, enjoyed dinner while 20% of their total receipt amount was given to the school's PTA. Upon entering the quick-dining restaurant, PTA President Katie Frank and Secretary Denise Rosebury stood out in their bold-red Quarterfield sweatshirts, handing out stickers to children as they signed-in for the event. Giveaways and classroom competitions are provided to motivate the families to come out, said Rosebury. The table for the fundraiser is prime real estate inside the …
