Fort Meade to Hold Ceremony for WWII POWs
The ceremony to honor German and Italian prisoners who died at Fort Meade will be open to the public.
During World War II, 35 prisoners of war from Germany and Italy died at Fort Meade. The installation will hold a wreath-laying ceremony Sunday at 10 a.m. to recognize these former soldiers, who are now buried at the Rock Avenue post cemetery. Representatives from the German and Italian embassies have been invited to the ceremony, which is open to the public at large. Fort Meade officials decided to open the ceremony to the public due to interest from local residents of German and Italian descent. In September of 1943, 1,632 Italian and 58 German POWs arrived at Fort Meade. See also:
