First Mariner Bank in Odenton to Close

The bank is one of three in the Baltimore area to close as the company trims expenses

The First Mariner Bank branch in Odenton will close later this month as the company looks to become more efficient.  The branch on Annapolis Road is one of three that will close on May 24. Branches in Perry Hall and Columbia also will close.  The Baltimore Business Journal attended the company's annual shareholder meeting Tuesday and said the closure is the result of the company's desire to trim expenses and evolve as more customers take advantage of online banking. Fifteen of the branch's 18 workers found other jobs in the company.

Army Seeks 165k of Space Near Fort Meade

A recent solicitation show the army wants a secure building within 10 miles of the installation.

The U.S. Army is seeking to lease between 125,000 and 165,000 square feet of top office space within 10 miles of Fort Meade, according to a recent solicitation notice.  The notice calls for "Class A" office space with a Level III security level. (There are four levels.) Interested parties were asked to respond by May 1, with briefings scheduled this week.  The Baltimore Business Journal reported that there are no existing buildings that meet the Army's criteria. However, Corporate Office Properties Trust is building more than 130,000 square feet of space at the National Business Park.  In Odenton, there are no buildings that meet the criteria, though the Halle Cos. has proposed as much as 3.5 million square feet of office space near the …

VIDEO: Checking Out Flats170

The first batch of apartments along Telegraph Road will be ready for residents next month. Patch got a tour of the construction site.

Scores of workers are on site along Telegraph Road working to complete the Flats170 at Academy Yard apartments.  Patch walked the construction site Tuesday with Jeff Kayce, vice president of the developer Bozzuto Group, to see the progress at the spot formerly occupied by the Nevamar plant.   About 40 of the 369 units will be ready for residents by next month, and the project is expected to be fully constructed by the end of the year.  All of the apartment buildings are out of the ground and work is now being done on facades and the interior.  There are 25 different floor plans, with sizes ranging from 698 square feet to 1,372 square feet. There are one-, two- and three-bedroom units including some with dens and lofts. Rents begin a $1,530…

Linda, the only aspect of your reply is that it is in walking distance to the Marc. The rest of your comment can be applied to any rental in the area. Since there are numerous entire townhomes or even homes with yards for rent that are larger and cheaper the whole "that its the going rate" part falls out of play. http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_rent/Odenton-MD/house,mobile,land_type/29211_rid/…   more ›

Developer Scraps Plans for a Hotel

Original plans for the Town Center Commons called for a 106-room hotel near the MARC station. Now developers have proposed live-work units on the site instead.

About five years ago, a developer got approval to build new condominiums in Odenton, and promised to partner on building a 106-room hotel to satisfy requirements for commercial space.  The developer has now scrapped the hotel plan, citing lack of demand. On Tuesday, Odenton Investments presented plans for a series of live-work units—three-story townhouses with offices on the street level—to fill the commercial space instead. “The commercial part of this project has not been successful,” said Odenton Investments' representative, Kevin Lusby. “Right now, there are just not any takers. No one has expressed any interest in that part of the project.” The hotel was proposed as part of the Town Center Commons development, located on the north …

@Bad Statistics. Just because people are employed nearby does not mean anything to Odenton proper. It hasn't meant anything for the last 20 years. No reason to start now. All this 'new' employment has been known for years. Odenton/AA County/State has (for many reasons) done very little locally to help with this. All these little parcels of land had to be bought by someone. All these little …   more ›

At Oasis Consignments, Feeling Good After One Year

Oasis Consignments in Odenton has turned into a place where many women can get a personal shopping experience.

Editor's Note: This article was originally published on Feb. 6. Debra Hoffmaster and Alexis Davis knew they wanted to open a consignment shop with a wide array of ladies' fashions. But in the first year since opening Oasis Consignments, they've done much more than that, serving as personal shoppers for scores of women across Anne Arundel County.  The duo opened the store on Piney Orchard Parkway last March, and have seen the store evolve from a simple place to get great clothing deals to a spot where women can get close attention and buying advice.  "Our goal is to help people feel better after they walk out," Hoffmaster said. "And with our store, it's a more personal feel, and that's what we're hoping for." Frequently, women will come …

Five Fake April Fool's Day Headlines

None of these stories about the Odenton-Severn area are true. But they could be.

Happy April Fool's Day!  We're not interested in fooling anyone, because it's just plain mean.  But if we wanted to trick local residents, we might publish these stories and try to pass them off as real news about the Odenton-Severn area. Enjoy!   Developer Proposes New 125,000-Unit Apartment Complex Citing the influx of new residents coming to the area, the Dolben Cos. has proposed building the largest apartment building in the world.  The complex would feature 10 Olympic-sized swimming pools, a 48-screen movie theater and a 500,000 square-foot clubhouse. There would also be a total of six parking spaces. To build the project, officials said they would take over the area known as "Boomtown" in North Odenton, though the adult video outlet …
