VIDEO: Checking Out Flats170

The first batch of apartments along Telegraph Road will be ready for residents next month. Patch got a tour of the construction site.

Scores of workers are on site along Telegraph Road working to complete the Flats170 at Academy Yard apartments.  Patch walked the construction site Tuesday with Jeff Kayce, vice president of the developer Bozzuto Group, to see the progress at the spot formerly occupied by the Nevamar plant.   About 40 of the 369 units will be ready for residents by next month, and the project is expected to be fully constructed by the end of the year.  All of the apartment buildings are out of the ground and work is now being done on facades and the interior.  There are 25 different floor plans, with sizes ranging from 698 square feet to 1,372 square feet. There are one-, two- and three-bedroom units including some with dens and lofts. Rents begin a $1,530…

Linda, the only aspect of your reply is that it is in walking distance to the Marc. The rest of your comment can be applied to any rental in the area. Since there are numerous entire townhomes or even homes with yards for rent that are larger and cheaper the whole "that its the going rate" part falls out of play. http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_rent/Odenton-MD/house,mobile,land_type/29211_rid/…   more ›

Flats170 Now Accepting Leases

You can now lock in to live at one of the new apartments on Telegraph Road.

It's now possible to secure a lease at the Flats170 at Academy Yard apartments.  Bozzuto Group has opened a leasing office at the site along Telegraph Road, and residents may be able to move in later this year. There are seven buildings under construction with 30 different floor plans with studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. In all, Flats170 will have 369 apartments.  Flats170 boasts a wide range of amenities including granite countertops, stainless-steel kitchen appliances, walk-in closets and full-size washers and dryers in each unit. The project, located at the former Nevamar site, is being constructed by Bozzuto Group in conjunction with StonebridgeCarras. It is the first phase of the Academy Yard project, which will …

Flats170 Apartments Scheduled for Summer Opening

The new complex at the former Nevamar site has been featured on a blog and also has a Facebook page.

After months of demolition and moving dirt, the developers of the Flats170 at Academy Yard apartments are entering the beginning of the end.   Construction has started at the complex at the former Nevamar site on Telegraph Road, and the apartments were recently featured on a blog by the residential developer, Bozzuto Group. Flats170 also has a Facebook page, where it's been promoting events in the area. The page has just three "likes" so far, but I have to assume they'll get more as construction becomes more visible.  Currently, anyone driving by the site can see some framework being raised for the first batch of 369 apartments.  On a blog on Bozzuto's official webpage, they said that the apartments are scheduled to open in the summer of …

PHOTOS: Chamber's 50th Anniversary Bash

Scores of local business and political leaders came out to the party on the site of the former Nevamar factory.

It was a large and spirited gathering Wednesday, as the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce hosted its 50th Anniversary celebration.  Dozens of local business and political leaders came out for the event, held under a tent at the site of the planned Academy Yard development along Telegraph Road.  Attendees heard about plans for hundreds of new apartments the site, which was formerly the home of the Nevamar factory. They also got a lesson in Odenton history, as past chamber presidents were on hand, along with members of the Odenton Heritage Society.  Phil Butts and the Sunset Band performed live, while J. King's offered a catered barbeque dinner.  Check out the gallery above to see scenes from the festivities. Do you have photos …

Chamber to Hold Anniversary Bash at Academy Yard

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 50th year with a bash on the site of the former Nevamar facility.

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is turning 50.  The chamber will hold a celebration Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the site of the former Nevamar plant, near construction of the new Flats170 at Academy Yard apartments.  Tables for the outdoor event are sold out, but it's still possible to buy a standing-room only ticket for $15. Admission includes BBQ, burgers, popcorn shrimp, and salads. There will also be a cash bar.  Casual attire and comfortable shoes are encouraged.  To attend the event, park at the lot across Telegraph Road. We selected this site both because of Nevamar's historic influence on Odenton's growth, and the role its redevelopment is playing in West County's future, situated as it is in the heart of the Odenton Town Center. There also aren't a lot of sites around where you can put up a 6000 sf tent!   more ›

PHOTOS: Demolition of the Nevamar Smokestack

Bettty Horne Fowler was on site as crews knocked down of of the last big pieces at the old industrial site.

It's now hardly a secret that the Nevamar factory is almost completely gone, as developers get set to build a new apartment complex there.  The demolition of the former plastics plant has been going on for months, but the final heavy pieces are starting to come down. Local history buffs Betty Horne Fowler and Veronica Salisbury were on site Monday as crews demolished the big Nevamar smokestack.   See also:

I think it's sad that so many jobs are gone to make way for more crowding and congestion in our area. It would be nice to keep the smoke stack, but even better to haves saved some jobs!!   more ›

PHOTO: Flats 170 Construction, From Above

The developer of the former Nevamar site provided this aerial photo of the ongoing construction.

By now, most people have driven by the former Nevamar site and seen the ongoing demolition and construction work. But it's difficult to get a sense of what is actually being done on site. Work crews are demolishing buildings and moving large piles of debris for recycling. Meanwhile, they are preparing the site for the construction of 369 apartments, to be called Flats170 at Academy Yard. Ellen Miller of developer StonebridgeCarras emailed me this aerial shot of the site, which offers a unique perspective on the size of the site and scope of work. See also:

Traffic Headache of the Week: Construction at Nevamar

Work on the new Flats 170 at Academy Yard project has led to some traffic delays on Telegraph Road.

Drivers heading up and down Telegraph Road recently may have encountered some delays resulting from work near the old Nevamar facility. Work crews have been busy demolishing old industrial buildings and starting work on the construction of a major new apartment complex. Most of the time, the construction has resulted only in the closure of the northbound shoulder. But there have been several times when the northbound lane is closed to allow trucks to transfer back and forth between areas of the construction site. The lane closures have not taken place during rush hour, but have resulted in backups of a dozen cars or more. StonebridgeCarras is working with Bozzuto Group on building Flats 170 at Academy Yard, an apartment complex designed to…

My one and only concern is the infrastructure. Are there any plans to widen the roads. I CANNOT imagine what the roads are going to be like when all these apartments, etc are inhabited. Right now, it takes me 20 minutes (in rush hour traffic) to go from Waugh Chapel Road and Piney Orchard Parkway to the crossing at 175 and Telegraph Road. I cannot make it to my office (11 miles) in less than 35 …   more ›

Demolition Continues at Nevamar

Crews have knocked down a second building on the old industrial site as a developer prepares to construct new apartments.

The landscape along Telegraph Road continues to change, as demolition crews tore down a second building of the old Nevamar facility this week. Heavy equipment is still on site moving around large pieces of debris, as a developer prepares to build a large apartment complex with 369 units. It's now possible to see the full expanse of the north end of the Nevamar property, which was once home to a plastics factory that employed hundreds of area residents. Developer StonebridgeCarras has partnered with Bozzuto Group to build Flats 170 at Academy Yard, a major apartment complex that will serve as the "gateway" to the Odenton Town Center from the north. Over time, StonebridgeCarras said it expects to demolish buildings on the rest of the site, …

I agree Roslyn. The Nevamar building has been an eyesore for quite sometime. It's just the apartments I object to because there are so many being built in the area. But all the other stuff sounds great!   more ›
