A student from Meade Middle School placed third in the Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee over the weekend. Promise Ohanyerenwa, an eighth grader, beat out 29 other students. The bee was ultimately won by Robin Roper of Severn River Middle School, who outdueled Olivia Simmons of Bates Middle School for the title. Roper won the bee by correctly spelling "wafflestomper." (A wafflestomper is a hiking boot with a lug sole.) Roper earned a trip to the national competition later this year. Roper correctly spelled the word in the 39th round of the competition to win her the title. That final round came only after a 27-round duel with defending spelling champion Olivia Simmons, of Bates Middle School, who finished second. Roper and Simmons …

The Meade Mega Market event will take place on May 5 and feature a silent auction. Tables are available for rent now.
Meade Middle School is planning a big event May 5 to raise money for new technology and programs. The school will host the "Meade Mega Market" event, featuring a community yard sale, silent auction and other activities. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Highlights include a silent auction from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a hamburger/hot dog stand from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will also be a "turn in your gold for cash" stand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Yard sale tables are for sale now for $25 each or $40 for two.
