Sun Review: Maryland Live! Bustling Following Table Games Addition

A Sun reviewer compared a recent visit with his experience shortly after the casino opened last year.

In a review in The Baltimore Sun Wednesday, writer Wesley Case recognized what he called the "crowded and energized floor" on a recent Friday night visit to the Maryland Live! Casino. Table games went live at the casino in April, after voters approved changes to gambling laws on the November ballot. Case wrote that the casino "appeared to be reaping the benefits of democracy." Case wrote he had wondered when the casino opened in November if the traffic would pickup and the facility would remain sustainable. In his review today, he praised the new music venue—Rams Head Center Stage—and the casino's active atmosphere since the addition of table games. "You wouldn't mistake the casino, which opened last June and introduced live table games on…

Maryland Live! officials announced Wednesday that the casino will have live table games in place by early spring, and will be hiring more than 800 dealers to shuffle cards and collect the dice.  Once the state of Maryland approves the relevant regulations, the new casino plans to move quickly in adding at least 150 live table games, potentially bringing a younger and wealthier crowd. It will also eventually move to 24-hour operations. Overall, Maryland Live! plans to hire as many as 1,200 workers, including dealers and various ancillary positions. The casino plans to open a free "dealer school" to train and identify dealer candidates in conjunction with Anne Arundel Community College. Those who pass through the 12-week program will be …

The operators of Maryland Live! said it will move fast to hire 1,000 new workers and install table games now that voters have approved expanded gambling.

House Committee Will 'Tweak' Gaming Bill

"Concerns are everywhere," said Del. Frank Turner, chairman of the House Ways and Means subcommittee on Gaming Law and Regulation.

A bill authorizing gambling expansion in Maryland will likely be amended, according to the chairman of the House subcommittee that is holding hearings on the legislation. Del. Frank Turner, a Howard County Democrat, initially characterized possible changes to the bill passed Friday by the Senate as minor. "Mostly it's a lot of tweaks," said Turner, the chairman of the House Ways and Means subcommittee on Gaming Law and Regulation. When asked what concerns his committee might have, Turner suggested the changes might be more substantive. "I think there are concerns everywhere," Turner said. "There are all kinds of concerns and ideas. Some will be germane and others won't. I think we're going to make it a better work product than what the …

O'Malley Gambling Bill Addresses Impact on Maryland Live!

New legislation allowing for expanding gaming in the state would also allow Maryland Live! to get a bigger cut of revenue, and money for local impact grants would be preserved.

Gov. Martin O’Malley on Tuesday said he would introduce a bill that would allow for expanded gambling in the state. The General Assembly will review the bill as part of a special session expected to convene Friday. The bill includes provisions allowing for a new casino in Prince George’s County, but also addresses the impact on the existing casinos in the state, including the Maryland Live! casino at Arundel Mills. Under the legislation, a new casino in Prince George’s County could open by July of 2016, or within 30 months of when the facility in Baltimore City opens. Live table games could also be added to casinos in the state. Voters would ultimately decide on whether to allow for expanded gambling when they head to the polls in November…

A Big Night for Casino Developer

After a battle to get a license for slots, The Cordish Cos. opened the Maryland Live! casino ahead of schedule. Are table games next?

David Cordish knew it was impossible to make money off of a casino unless you could first get the thing built. After winning a vote in 2010 to allow for a license to have slots near Arundel Mills, the Baltimore-based real estate developer started work quickly, and the first phase of Maryland Live! opened Wednesday. "It's an exciting night, and I am very proud of what we've done," said Cordish, the chairman and founder of The Cordish Cos. "The state of Maryland asked for a world-class facility, and we delivered." Time will tell whether Cordish's $500 million investment will pay off. But in the near term, officials have touted the creation of 4,000 jobs to the area and an expected $400 million in tax revenue. Cordish noted the speed of …

Love the picture. You have to ask "Would you buy a used car (or anything else) from this man?" The county executive did. And we still haven't heard from one official who can explain how a casino that was supposed to help Maryland's struggling horse industry ended up in Cordish's yard. Improvements to the MD 295 interchange at Arundel Mills Boulevard are still under construction and will be completed early next week, according to the SHA.
