Arundel Students Read 'Poetry Out Loud'

English students recited poetry to classmates as part of a national competition.

Standing and speaking before a live audience is one of the most common fears, but Arundel High students took the challenge head on recently with a poetry competition involving English classes at the school.  Nearly two dozen students (mostly 11th-graders)took part in the "Poetry Out Loud" competition, each reciting two poems by memory in front of classmates and judges. The students took part in the school-wide competition after being selected as among the best in their individual English classes.  Maddie Swanson emerged as the winner after reciting Solitude by Ella Wheeler Wilcox and The Idler by Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson. English teacher Ann Kelly said Swanson earned high marks for accuracy and the complexity of the poems. Swanson will …

Representatives from local youth sports leagues told county officials that they'd like to see more ball fields and permanent lighting. The county is in the process of updating its long-range plan for parks and open space.

With Anne Arundel County set to map out a long-term plans for its open space and recreation areas, local residents involved in youth sports in Odenton, Severn and Crofton said they’d like to see more fields, more lights and more indoor facilities. During a public hearing Tuesday with officials from the Department of Recreation and Parks, commissioners from all the major athletic councils in the area asked that the county find a way to ease the pressure on ball fields and parks that are filled to capacity. Residents spoke at Arundel High School during the first of four public hearings to generate suggestions for the 2012 Land Preservation Parks and Recreation Plan, designed to map out the county’s open space needs over the next 20 years. …

Fort Meade Does Away With DOD Decals

Beginning Nov. 5, visitors to the base will no longer need Department of Defense decals on their cars to enter.

Visitors to Fort Meade will no longer be required to have Department of Defense decals on their cars, under a new policy endorsed by the Army. Starting on Nov. 5, regular visitors will only be required to show a Civilian Access Card or a military identification card to drive onto base. The Department of the Army recommended the change in policy in September, but left the final decision up to the commanders of each installation. In a press release, Fort Meade’s installation commander endorsed the change as part of an ongoing effort to make things easier for residents, workers and visitors on base. “As we take hard looks at ways to improve services and efficiencies, we saw the elimination of the decal program as a cost saving measure which …

Open Session Reveals Potential 'Head Start' for Magnet Program Students

The brand new Performing Visual Arts High School's location and programming will be fully announced in the next 30 to 45 days, according to officials.

Renee Church pushed a stroller through Old Mill’s hallways as her daughter climbed her like a jungle gym. Juggling her two young children and the attention of her 11-year-old son Connor, Church attended the Open Session at Old Mill High School Wednesday night for parents to learn about Anne Arundel County’s 16 magnet programs ranging from middle school to high school. Church was just one of hundreds of parents in attendance looking to decide whether they would apply their child for various programs like Performing Visual Arts (PVA), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Center of Applied Technology (CAT). A decision that’s a no-brainer according to Dr. Joseph Wieczorek, who greeted the parents to kick-off the night. Wieczorek serves as the …

A Fighter at Fort Meade

Air Force Sergeant David Perez has spent more than four years deployed in the Middle East, and now works at Fort Meade. On Saturday, he'll be part of a major mixed martial arts event in Baltimore.

David Perez looks over the menu of a local restaurant and winces. He flips it over, then back. “I can’t have anything on here,” he says with resignation. A waitress cheerfully talks him into a small side salad with no dressing. Perez isn’t dieting, but is trying to make weight for a big fight on Saturday night. The mixed martial arts featherweight is watching every ounce as he gets set for his bout with Mike Young in the Shogun Fights V event at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore. “I’m pretty much non-stop with my training and conditioning,” he says. Perez’s composed persona is a striking contrast to the formidable characters featured on television events like UFC. But he admittedly wasn’t always so cool and collected. Discipline and …
