Benoit to Propose Removal of Jones From Council

Councilman Jamie Benoit has said he plans to introduce legislation that would declare Daryl Jones' seat vacant when he reports to federal prison in January, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Anne Arundel County Councilman Jamie Benoit (D-4th District) of Crownsville plans to introduce legislation during Monday's council meeting that would declare Councilman Daryl Jones' seat vacant after he reports to federal prison in January, The Baltimore Sun reported Saturday. The legislation would be introduced as an emergency ordinance that would need five votes in order to be approved. The county attorney, Jonathan A. Hodgson, recently filed a legal opinion that stated the council could remove Jones (D-1st District) from his seat when he reports to prison as he would not be living in the district he represents during his five-month sentence, according to the Sun. Jones, a Severn resident, was sentenced to five months in federal prison …

I am glad the council is addressing, since Jones has been slow to act. Cheers to the lady from Pasadena for trying to get them to do it earlier.   more ›

Benoit Won't Run For Congress

The Anne Arundel County Council member says he will not run for the House of Representatives.

County Councilman Jamie Benoit (D-4th District) announced that he will not run for Congress, citing a desire to continue working on behalf of Anne Arundel County.  The Crownsville resident, who represents Odenton and Gambrills on the county council, had expressed an interest in pursuing the Democratic nomination for the newly drawn 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. But he said Monday night that he will instead serve out the remaining two years on his council term. “Given the uncertainty and turmoil that currently exists in the county, I know I can best serve Anne Arundel County by remaining on the Council,” he said in a press release. “Now more than ever, our community needs stability and experienced leadership. So I am …

Benoit to Decide on Congressional Campaign by Thanksgiving

The County Councilman has already formed an exploratory committee for the Democratic nomination for Maryland's 4th District.

Anne Arundel County Councilman Jamie Benoit said he hopes to decide by Thanksgiving whether to pursue a seat in the Maryland legislature. The former Odenton resident, who now represents District 4 on the County Council, announced last week the formation of an exploratory committee to pursue the Democratic nomination for Maryland redrawn 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The seat is currently filled by Donna Edwards, a Democrat from Fort Washington who was elected in 2008. Benoit said he had never considered running for federal office before this year, but began thinking about it after listening to rhetoric during the debate over Congressional redistricting in Maryland. “Obviously this is a profoundly important time in our …

County Council Delays Vote on Binding Arbitration

The Anne Arundel County Council heard testimony from more than 60 police officers and firefighters.

After hearing three hours of heated testimony from Anne Arundel County police officers and firefighters, the County Council decided they wanted to do it all again. County Councilmen Daryl Jones (D-1st District) and Jamie Benoit (D-4th District) voted in favor of the amendment Tuesday night that would limit the power of an arbitrator in labor disputes between public sector employees and the county, but the council delayed a vote on the bill. The legislation, sponsored by Council Chairman Dick Ladd (R-5th District) of Severna Park at the request of County Executive John R. Leopold, would give the council the last say in benefit disputes. Councilman John Grasso (R-2nd District) of Glen Burnie supports the bill. Currently, public sector unions…

Benoit: Council May Not Protect School Funding

The District 4 Councilman said closing a $35 million county budget shortfall could mean there will be cuts to education.

The Anne Arundel County Council may allow County Executive John Leopold to request permission from the state to cut spending on schools, Councilman Jamie Benoit said.  The representative of District 4 said closing an estimated $35 million budget shortfall could result in education cuts, despite a state law requiring school spending to at least be level to the year before. Benoit made his comments Tuesday before members of the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce at Kaufmann's Tavern. In recent years, the council has blocked attempts by Leopold to request a waiver of the school spending law, but Benoit said this year, the council could allow Leopold to make the plea to the state legislature.  “I know he’ll ask for the waiver again …
