It's still possible to contribute to Sandy relief efforts by tweeting the hashtag #patchrebuilds.
Patch will make a $1 donation to AmeriCares for every tweet with the hashtag #PatchRebuilds.
Here in the Odenton and Severn communities, we got through Sandy relatively unscathed. But our neighbors in New Jersey and New York are still dealing with hardship. You can help rebuild communities that were hit by Hurricane Sandy by donating cans of food, volunteering for cleanup efforts—or simply sending a tweet. Patch is excited to announce our new effort to help support devestated communities after the storm. For every tweet sent with the hashtag #PatchRebuilds, we will donate $1 to the AmeriCares Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund, up to $125,000. Your contribution will go toward medical and humanitarian aid, grants and programs to help Sandy survivors. This comes after Patch and AOL already shipped several truckloads of goods to …

Employees help out, and you can, too
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? A National Weather Service forecaster said Maryland is unlikely to get much of a hit from the nor'easter developing to the southeast, one that could hit areas still recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
Here we go again? Just a week after Superstorm Sandy rumbled up the eastern seaboard, a powerful nor'easter appears set to do the same, with the outside chance to dump a wintry mix on parts of Maryland. In an advisory Monday, the National Weather Service said the storm is expected to develop off the Carolina coast on Tuesday before moving north. Ken Widelski, a forecaster with the NWS in Sterling, VA, said in a phone interview that how much precipitiation the Baltimore area gets—if any—depends on how far west the storm forms. "The exact track of the system is very uncertain right now," Widelski said. "There is a chance for some precipitation that would be generally Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night. If that were the case, it could …

Along the Jersey shore and near New York City, Patch has covered the impact of the superstorm.
Here in Maryland, we were fortunate to get through the storm known as Sandy with little loss of life or property. Further north, residents weren't as lucky. Sandy hit hard in many parts of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut with dozen of lives lost and billions of dollars in damage. More than 300 Patch sites were impacted by Sandy. Many of those sites are in areas where residents are dealing with massive devastation. Patch editors there have been working hard to provide updates, often without the luxury of electricity, cell phone service or other services. Some have been displaced from their own homes, yet continue to work in order to keep their communities informed. Check out these Patch sites for great coverage of the storm, and go …

Here is how local residents can aid victims in most affected areas in the Northeast.
Maryland was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us. The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. Wind directions, low temperatures and a dry summer all mitigated Hurricane Sandy's impact on the Bay.
The impact of Hurricane Sandy on the Chesapeake Bay was less than expected by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "The good news is that this storm came so late in the season that all of our underwater grasses in the Bay are going into a dormant phase like the trees," said Bruce Michael, who is the director of resource assessment for DNR. "A storm of this magnitude would have had a much more detrimental impact on the Bay if it were to come in June or July when things are much more active and alive." The summer was also a dry one, which means reservoirs were at much lower levels and could accommodate more storm water, Michael said. He expects the Susquehanna River, which enters the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay in Havre …

Report cards will still be go out on Nov. 16, as previously scheduled.
In the wake of the post-tropical storm known as Sandy, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) announced the first quarter marking period will be extended to Nov. 7, two class days later than the previously scheduled Nov. 2 deadline. Because Sandy's effects cancelled classes for two days, delayed openings on Wednesday and left 17 schools without electricity, teachers will have an additional three days to complete testing and assessments to end the marking period. "Obviously our decision to close schools on Monday and Tuesday has impacted the plans of many teachers heading into the end of the first marking period, which had been scheduled for Friday," said Superintendent Kevin Maxwell in a letter sent home to parents. "In order to …
There were still widespread outages in Gambrills and Crofton, but much of Odenton and Severn was back on.
There are still thousands of people without electricity in west Anne Arundel County, but many residents have seen power restored Wednesday. An updated map of outages from Baltimore Gas & Electric showed roughly 300 outages in Odenton, with scattered outages in Severn. That's down from several thousand outages after the storm hit. Most of Piney Orchard had power restored Wednesday. Things were still dark in sections of Gambrills and Crofton along the Route 3 corridor, though many business were open, including those in the Village at Waugh Chapel and Waugh Chapel Towne Centre. BGE reported 13,719 customers without service in Anne Arundel County, but said it had restored service to 85,953 customers in the county. See also: Are you still …
