Laura Neuman Named Anne Arundel County Executive

The chief executive officer of Howard County’s Economic Development Authority will be sworn into office at 10 a.m. Friday in Annapolis.

UPDATE (11:45 a.m.)—Laura Neuman, who was selected to be the new county executive, was greeted with a rush of applause moments after she received a majority vote Thursday from the Anne Arundel County Council. Neuman, 46, is a native of Anne Arundel County and the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority.  She gave a rousing speech during her interview with council members on Thursday night, laying her whole life bare—her trials and successes in making her own way in the world. 16 Hopefuls Apply for County Executive Seat

The Anne Arundel County Council will interview applicants and make a selection on Feb. 21.

There were zero on Wednesday and five on Thursday, but by the noon deadline on Friday, 16 candidates had filled out applications to be the next Anne Arundel county executive. The following list of applicants was provided by Anne Arundel County Council's administrative officer Elizabeth Jones: Five of the candidates were at a forum in Odenton on Thursday night, and Patch has video footage of each making their pitch for the position. The council is scheduled to interview applicants and select a new county executive at 7 p.m. on Feb. 21. The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live. Shannon….and I suppose you have personal knowledge of Ms Ehrlich's frugality and knowledge of the issues at hand? She strikes me as someone who really is out of touch with the 'common man'. Personally I have nothing against her….I just do not think she is the best pick for this job. Benoit Will Not Run For County Executive

The Council member from District 4 said he will not seek a new job in politics once his term is up in 2014, but did not rule out a future campaign.

Anne Arundel County Council member Jamie Benoit (D-District 4) said he will not run for county executive in 2014, but did not rule out a bid for political office further into the future.  In a letter to supporters and the media, Benoit said he would return to being a private citizen once his Council term is up in 2014. He had long been named as a possible candidate for county executive and acknowledged interest in the position. But he said it was time to take a break from "juggling" his responsibilities of government, business and family.
