The Christian Assistance Program handed out more than 1,800 servings of food in 2012, marking an all-time high and continuing a steady increase in recent years. The pantry, which operates twice weekly out of the Severn United Methodist Church, handed out food to families 1,849 times, up from 1,709 in 2011 and 1,629 in 2010. The 2012 figure represents more than 150 servings each month, or between 30 and 40 servings a week. A "serving" of groceries generally represents about a week's worth of food and can vary depending on the size of the household. Visitors to the pantry are permitted to collect food no more than once a month. Visitors to the food pantry generally receive a variety of canned goods, dry cereal, bread, pasta, rice, peanut…

The food pantry run by the local Christian Assistance Program is seeking a new volunteer manager. Current manager Jean McHenry has decided to retire from the position after several years running the operation, which is housed at the Severn United Methodist Church. The pantry serves needy families living in Odenton, Severn, Gambrills and Fort Meade and is supported by about a dozen churches in west Anne Arundel County. The pantry operates on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. The managers' duties include coordinating volunteers, arranging food pickups and record keeping. Here's the note that McHenry sent Tuesday to the local church community. "Since this is a Christian organization we would like a Christian …

A freezer recently broke down at the food pantry at the Severn United Methodist Church, resulting in the spoilage of meat that was stored inside. The food pantry, which operates twice weekly and serves needy residents of Odenton, Severn, Gambrills and Fort Meade, is now looking for a replacement freezer. The pantry has one freezer that still works, but it's not large enough to handle deliveries of all of the frozen beef, chicken, hot dogs and other meat. If you have an extra freezer you wish to donate, or can help in any other way, email Jean McHenry at mchenrysnorth40@verizon.net

The owner of Environmental Auto Services in Millersville wants to give residents a reason to help their neighbors in need.
Auto shop owner Steve Connolly saw a local food pantry in need and didn’t hesitate to put his company to work. After reading an article on Patch about the Severn United Methodist Food Pantry’s dire need of donations, Connolly knew he wanted to help. Back in August, the food pantry at Severn United Methodist Church was at risk of closing its doors. More and more families were turning up throughout the summer months but donations were decreasing every week, said pantry manager Jean McHenry. Despite battling through knee surgeries on both legs, the 78-year-old volunteer was devoted to the cause. But the drop in donations made her fear for those who depended on the pantry to eat. Having never met McHenry, Connolly started an initiative that …

After two knee surgeries, Jean McHenry says she's as passionate as ever to help those in need, but a lack of food donations could end it all.
For 78-year-old Jean McHenry, each step is getting a little harder than the next. But despite the pain in her knees, McHenry said there’s one thing she won’t allow while she’s still moving about. “I hate to see people go hungry,” McHenry said. After knee-replacement surgeries on each leg, McHenry continues to work for the good of others. “I’m mostly bionic right now,” she said. “But turning somebody away, it’s always hard.” It’s not McHenry’s knees that are giving out, it’s the donations. In May, 126 families required food. In June, it was 159 families, and the number has continued to rise in July and August, months that are usually “slower.” Things are getting so tight at the pantry, McHenry fears that if more donations aren’t made, all …

If they contact Bruce at the Crowwnsville Food Bank he may have a freezer that they can have for free. Being new to the area we stopped by to see if he needed any volunteers (we did this in Mass and found it very fulfilling). He is a wonderful person always looking to help others. Their facility is hugh. They even have cars that they give to those truly in need.   more ›
