Arundel Lacrosse Teams Fall, Baseball Wins

The action was fierce in rivalry games against South River.

It was a tough night on Friday for the Arundel lacrosse teams as the girls and boys each fell to South River.  The Arundel baseball team, however, secured a key in-county win by beating the Seahawks at Joe Cannon Stadium.  Here's a quick look at the latest results: BASEBALL: Arundel beat South River 4-2 behind a strong pitching effort from Steve Ghiardi. The win keeps the Wildcats right in the thick of the county race.  BOYS LACROSSE: South River 10, Arundel 6. The Seahawks handed the Arundel boys their first loss of the season. Cameron Cetrone scored three times for Arundel, while Matt Gaskins scored two goals for South River.  GIRLS LACROSSE: South River topped the Arundel girls 21-3, led by five goals by Jacquelyn Spalding.   Upload any…

Arundel High: Winter Sports Get Going

The basketball, wrestling and bowling seasons are among those getting started this week.

There was very little gap between the fall and winter sports seasons at local high schools.  Winter sports get going this week with scrimmages, and some regular season matchups are scheduled for next week.  Here's a look at what's happening at Arundel High. High School Field Hockey, Soccer Set for Playoffs

The girls soccer team earned a first-round bye and will play its first match Tuesday.

The MPSSAA playoffs are set for several local high school sports teams. The state field hockey tournament is underway, while soccer kicks off Thursday. Meanwhile, cross country runners had their championship earlier this week.  Here's a look at what's happening for the local teams in each sport.  GIRLS SOCCER Arundel earned the number one seed in the east region of the MPSSAA Class 4A state soccer tournament.  The Lady Wildcats earned a first-round bye and will play Tuesday against the winner between Great Mills and North County.  Arundel finished with just one loss in the regular season, after falling 3-0 to South River on Tuesday. South River earned the second seed in the east bracket, and the two teams could face each other in the …

Football: Arundel Hosts Meade in Local Clash

Both the Wildcats and Mustangs are hoping to begin 3-0 on the season. Meanwhile, Old Mill looks to continue winning with a game at North County.

Local high school football teams are back in action Friday night in Week 3 of the season. The Arundel High Wildcats will host the Meade High Mustangs at Carroll Field, pitting two teams with undefeated records.  Arundel is coming off a 55-0 trouncing of Northeast last week, while Meade recorded a big 41-0 win over Annapolis.  Arundel quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 12 passes on 14 attempts with 5 touchdown passes against Northeast before being relieved by friend Jack Gordon. Running back Matt Davis had 105 yards rushing on just five carries, and scored twice. Meade is led by quarterback Marcus Smith, who had 125 yards passing and three scores against Annapolis. Varsity kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Carroll Field in Gambrills. …

Arundel High's Bocce Team Back in Action

The team of special needs athletes and partners took to Carroll Field Tuesday for a match against Chesapeake.

The Arundel High School bocce team took to Carroll Field Tuesday, uniting special needs athletes with partners in a competition with Chesapeake High. The match marked the start of a second season for the bocce team, which debuted last year as the first "unified" varsity sport and came away with the county championship. Chesapeake prevailed Tuesday, but spirits were high as the teams went three rounds on the turf fields. "This is my favorite sport," said 11th-grader Tim Lapinsky, who also competes in several Special Olympic sports, including running, cycling and kayaking. "I like to knock out the other team's balls." 5 Big Athletic Contests This Week

There's a lot of great hoops action in the county this week, and the best runners and jumpers in the area will be competing for top honors.

  Boys Basketball, Arundel at Meade —Tuesday, 5 p.m. The Arundel boys head up Annapolis Road with a perfect record still intact. Meade, meanwhile, will be hungry for a win after losing two of three games last week. Girls Basketball, Arundel at Meade—Tuesday, 7 p.m. The girls game between Arundel and Meade is always intense. The Arundel girls have struggled this year, while Meade is clinging to the top spot in the county.  Boys Basketball, Old Mill vs. South River—Tuesday, 5 p.m. The Old Mill boys have won six straight and need to avoid any bad losses to stay in the county title hunt.
