Fort Meade officials broke ground on a new privately developed apartment complex. The project will target junior enlisted service members who have been priced out of apartments nearby.
As Fort Meade has seen its population grow, it also has seen an increasing number of service members living further away from the installation gates. Young service members in particular have found themselves priced out of housing nearby and now commute from as much as 30 minutes away, Army officials said. The installation is now addressing that problem with the construction of Reece Crossings, a new garden-style apartment complex on base. It is the first-ever privately built apartment project designed specifically for junior enlisted service members. Officials broke ground on the complex during a ceremony Wednesday at Fort Meade. Picerne Military Housing hopes to deliver the first set of apartments this year. There will be 416 two-…

It has become a familiar sight in Odenton: large apartment buildings, rising along the town’s major thoroughfares. There are 259 new units near the traffic circle, and another 369 units under construction along Telegraph Road. Over by the MARC station, 235 units are now available to lease. All told, Odenton has more than 1,350 apartment units either newly built, under construction or in the development pipeline. Nearly all come with high rents and luxury amenities, and all are located within a three-mile stretch of one another. Business leaders in Odenton said the apartment boom brings the promise of new residents, putting a charge into efforts to expand the town’s array of shops and restaurants. But the community is also carefully …

Novus Residences has proposed 239 units at Nevada Avenue and Hale Street and could get final approval from the county later this year.
A major developer on Tuesday night moved one step closer to building 239 new apartment units at the corner of Nevada Avenue and Hale Street. The Odenton Town Center Plan Oversight Committee recommended approval of the project by Novus Residences, calling it a potential linchpin to development in central Odenton. The project will now go before the county Office of Planning and Zoning, which is charged with granting final approval. Committee members noted the project is one of the few new projects that far west in the Odenton Town Center and could help spur additional development in the area. “This end is a key piece,” said Mike Fox, a long-range planner with the county who oversees the Odenton Town Center plan. The Novus project features a …
The developer of the former Nevamar site provided this aerial photo of the ongoing construction.
By now, most people have driven by the former Nevamar site and seen the ongoing demolition and construction work. But it's difficult to get a sense of what is actually being done on site. Work crews are demolishing buildings and moving large piles of debris for recycling. Meanwhile, they are preparing the site for the construction of 369 apartments, to be called Flats170 at Academy Yard. Ellen Miller of developer StonebridgeCarras emailed me this aerial shot of the site, which offers a unique perspective on the size of the site and scope of work. See also:

Construction is ongoing at the new complex, but people are moving in.
Nearly half of the apartments at the Haven at Odenton Gateway are leased, property officials said, even while construction of units is ongoing. The complex has accepted leases from about 110 tenants, or 44 percent of the expected total of 252, Property Manager Jennifer Geroux said. The main common areas, including the clubhouse, pool and workout center, are finished. Leasing began in April, and many residents have moved in. Others have signed leases for apartments still under construction. Full completion of the project is on schedule for August. "It's very exciting to see the residents coming in now," Geroux said. She said many of the new tenants are employees of the Department of Defense, who have moved to the area due to the expansion …
