Anne Arundel Schools Open 2 Hours Late Thursday

Schools will dismiss at their normal time, instead of having a two-hour early dismissal as originally scheduled.

All Anne Arundel County Public Schools will open two hours late on Thursday due to inclement weather. Since high school exams were scheduled for Thursday, the school day will shift and schools will dismiss at their normal times instead of having a two-hour early dismissal. There will be no half-day pre-kindergarten or ECI programs. Full-day pre-kindergarten programs will be in session, but will start two hours late. See more:

I'm still trying to figure out the logic of 2-hour early dismissal on all high school exam days. This disrupts all elementary and middle schools students as well. Are they telling us there is absolutely nothing the high school students could at school to productively utilize their time and complete a full day of class?   more ›

Public Hearings Set for Crofton School Redistricting Plan

The school board will get feedback on the plan on March 12.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will hear feedback in March on a proposed redistricting plan involving elementary schools in Crofton. The board will hold a hearing at Arundel High School on March 12 and will accept public testimony on the plan, which seeks to reduce overcrowding at Nantucket Elementary School and other schools in Crofton.  The school system will also brief the public on the plan during a special meeting on Feb. 5, though no public testimony will be accepted at that time.  The board is reviewing a plan submitted by Superintendent Kevin Maxwell that is identical to one proposed by a special redistricting committee last year.  The proposed redistricting plan calls for the following:  The school board could still …

Gov. Martin O'Malley celebrated the achievement at an Anne Arundel County school.

Maryland schools were ranked the best in the nation for the fifth year in a row, according to a study released by Education Week. Gov. If you rate schools as most people do, pupil achievement, Md is not even in the top 10. Just because we spend more per student, allow more beatings and fights in the class room, and grade on a feel good mark rather than test performance, does not land a school in first place except in this trash magazine.   more ›

Local School Improvements Included in Capital Budget

Several schools in west Anne Arundel County would get money for everything from kindergarten additions to HVAC upgrades under the capital budget proposed last month.

Next week, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education will hold two public hearings to discuss the proposed operating and capital budgets for fiscal year 2014.  The proposal from Superintendent Kevin Maxwell calls for more than $1 billion in operating expenses and a capital budget of about $240 million.  The capital budget includes requests to fund expansion and renovation projects at many schools, including several in west Anne Arundel County.  Those local schools include:  In most cases, the proposed spending represents a portion of the total cost of the projects. Other funds have either been spent in previous years or are expected to be included in later years.  A review of the six-year capital plan for the county schools shows other …
