Katherine Langdon of Arundel High and Eric Stoker-Spirt are the two most recent winners of the corporate-sponsored awards.
Two local high school students have received awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Katherine Langdon of Arundel High won a scholarship sponsored by the Mitre Corporation to pursue a degree in international relations, according to an announcement. Eric Stoker-Spirt of Old Mill High is the recipient of the James E. Casey Scholarship, which is sponsored by UPS. The senior plans to study science and research in college. The two students are among about 8,000 who will receive awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation this year. Awards range from $500 to $10,000 annually and can be used for up to four years of study in college.
The students are honored at a ceremony in front of parents, school leaders and Arundel Middle graduates.
Arundel Middle School inducted 29 students into its National Junior Honor Society on Wednesday, recognizing them for their well-rounded approach to scholarship. The students in grades 6 through 8 were honored during a special ceremony in front of parents, school leaders and former students. "I believe that what should make your parents most proud is not what you have achieved, but what you have done to achieve it," said Zachary Brown, a 7th-grade science teacher and advisor to the NJHS. The NJHS recognizes students who have shown good scholarship, leadership and character, while also serving others. Students from Chesapeake Science Point led the school to first place in the competition at Anne Arundel Community College.
Chesapeake Science Point won first place in a mathematics competition at Anne Arundel Community College, as two of its students tied for the top individual prize. Jeremy Dy and Lukash Onyshkevych tied for first in the Anne Arundel County Community College Math Competition, helping Chesapeake Science Point to a win over second place Severna Park. Archbishop Spalding placed third in the competition. The weeklong summer camp will focus on environmentalism. It is organized by a Piney Orchard resident and public school employee.
An Odenton educator is bringing back a popular summer camp, this time with an environmental theme. Jonathan Schachter is taking registrations now for his weeklong Camp Discovery, which will run from July 29 to August 2 at Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church. The camp is a values-based program featuring a series of guest speakers, arts and crafts and other lessons. This year’s camp will center on issues relating to the environment, ecology and conservation. The board is expected to approve the work for two local elementary schools and two middle schools.
The county school board is expected to approve a contract for the removal of asbestos and installation of new insulation at four local schools. The Anne Arundel Board of Education will vote Wednesday on the $201,000 contract, with work expected to be completed by July. The four impacted schools are Arundel and MacArthur middle schools and Four Seasons and Millersville elementary schools. Asbestos Specialists Inc. is the contract awardee.

Early feedback from residents has been positive.
County school officials said there will be a series of community meetings in the near future to present plans for a cell tower on the property of Piney Orchard Elementary School. Officials said Wednesday that members of the community will have chance to give feedback on the plan, which calls for a 90-foot tower to be constructed by Milestone Communications. It would initially be built to provide greater coverage for Verizon Wireless customers, though the pole could allow for at least four other carriers. The tower would follow a "tree pole" design meant to blend in with surrounding forestry. A school bus was involved in a minor accident near the intersection of Annapolis and Disney roads Tuesday morning, but there were no reports of injuries. Keith Swindle, a division chief and spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said units were called shortly before 9:30 a.m. They responded to find that a bus had collided mirrors with another vehicle. Anne Arundel County Public Schools spokesman Bob Mosier said the students were from MacArthur Middle School. He confirmed that there were no reports of injuries. Swindle said that the accident happened nearly 45 minutes earlier but emergency officials were not immediately called. Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) announced Wednesday afternoon that they are monitoring the weather situation but expect that schools will be open on Thursday.
