Arundel High to Host All-Star Hoops Tourney

Top players from Arundel, Old Mill and Spalding are among those participating in the annual event, sponsored by Capital Gazette Communications.

The top high school basketball players from Anne Arundel County will be on display Wednesday at the annual Capital-Gazette All-Star Classic event. Arundel High School will host the 25th annual tournament, and the most valuable players from the previous 24 versions of the event will be honored during the game.  The All-Star Classic is sponsored by Capital-Gazette Communications. Tickets are $5, and proceeds from the event will go toward the Boys and Girls Scholarship Trust. AACS Preps for Annual Golf Classic

The tournament to benefit the AACS athletic programs is scheduled for Sept. 26 at Queenstown Harbor Golf Club.

Students at Annapolis Area Christian School begin classes Wednesday, and are encouraging the public to sign up for a golf tournament to support the school's athletic programs. The 9th annual AACS Golf Classic is set for Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Queenstown Harbor Golf Club. Entry to the event costs $125, or $500 per foursome.(Alumni can play for $80, or $320 per foursome.) Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. There will be an awards dinner after golf. Entry to the golf classic includes all greens fees, giveaways, a boxed lunch and a dinner featuring barbecue ribs and chicken. AACS Hoopster Set to Walk On at Maryland

Point guard Connor Lipinski will help run the scout team for the Terps, the Baltimore Sun reports.

A lifelong Maryland basketball fan will fulfill a dream of playing for the Terps, after accepting an offer to walk on to the team next season. The Baltimore Sun reported that Connor Lipinski, a point guard at Annapolis Area Christian School, got a "preferred walk-on" offer from Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon. "I went down for a practice … [and] they told me I had a spot, so I made the decision right there,” Lipinski told the newspaper. “I just told [Turgeon] that I wanted to be a part of the team and I was ready.” Lipinski's brother, Evan, is a manager at Maryland. AACS Superintendent Retires Immediately in Wake of Lawsuit

George J.W. Lawrence stepped down, following a lawsuit accusing him and the school of fostering a hostile work environment. A transition team is in place.

Annapolis Area Christian School announced that Superintendent George J.W. Lawrence Jr. will retire immediately, after three former employees filed a lawsuit against the school last month alleging sex discrimination and retaliation. The school, which has campuses in Severn and Annapolis, said it will implement a transition team consisting of the principals of the three schools and its business manager. "The board and former Superintendent Lawrence are in agreement that the interests of our students, parents, faculty and staff cannot be best served by the distraction of his on-site presence in light of the lawsuit filed on December 27, 2011, and therefore he is immediately retiring," said AACS Board of Directors President Michael Edmonds in …

AACS Concert Invites Top Talent from the Past

Talented alumni and faculty from Annapolis Area Christian School will perform at the Kerr Center for the Arts on Saturday.

Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) alumni are gathering Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of artistic performances at the Kerr Center for the Arts.  Known as the Faculty, Alumni and Friends Concert, the show will feature performances by students who have graduated, as well as talented staff members. The AACS Upper School will host the event and a “suggested donation” charge of $10 is recommended for those attending. The proceeds from the concert will go towards the Kerr Center for the Arts, however, the fee is not mandatory. “Some of the people coming back are really talented,” said AACS spokeswoman Juliet Wright. Former AACS Employees File Lawsuit Against Superintendent

Three former staff members said the AACS superintendent engaged in harassing and inappropriate behavior.

The Superintendent of Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) is facing a lawsuit filed by three former employees, claiming sex discrimination and retaliation by the school and its leader. According to an article by the Maryland Gazette, a lawsuit filed Dec. 27 by AACS’s former Director of Human Resources Sharon Finecy, former Assistant to the Dean of Students Lynn George and former Director of Finance Anthony Masevice claims that Superintendent George J. Lawrence Jr. harassed his colleagues and created an unhealthy work environment. All three of the former employees involved in the lawsuit resigned after Lawrence’s hiring in 2009, with each stating that Lawrence was the reason for their departure from AACS, according to the article’s …

Variety Show Showcases Numerous Talents

AACS students in grades K-12, along with faculty and staff, showed off various talents at last night's.

Annapolis Area Christian School (AACS) students, faculty and staff showcased their dancing, acting and musical talents Friday night during the school’s variety show. All 33 acts, including vocal solos, dances , short skits, group musical numbers and comedic acts, were followed by lengthy applause in a jammed-packed Kerr Center for the Arts. The AACS variety show is a school effort to tap into talent in all grades, kindergarten through 12th grade, director and choreographer Joanne Wenger said. AACS junior Victoria Bartlett performed in multiple acts last night, but it was her solo dance piece that showcased her full talent. Students Pursue Higher Education with Faith in Mind

Annapolis Area Christian School alumni talked to current AACS students about their personal college experiences.

Five AACS alumni shared their college experiences Wednesday in front of the school's chapel session, noting their Christian faith as an important factor in their education. Juliet Wright, the marketing and communications representative of AACS, said that 99% of AACS students go to college. It's important to offer an opportunity for (AACS) alumni to come back, Wright said. It allows the student body to connect with thealumni and realize that those students were once in their same position. "Virtually every person in the audience today will be in the alumni's place," Wright said. Andy Stallings, a 2009 AACS graduate, said that everyone in his family attended state universities, but he chose to attend Liberty University, a Christian college …

Young Thespians Shine in AACS Comedy Production

Annapolis Area Christian School had a screening of the play, "You Can't Take It With You" on November 18th

What makes life worth living? An existential question with simple answers. The implications of said answers can be difficult to implement in one's life. Annapolis Area Christian School's Drama Department offered up a play titled You Can't Take It With You, in response to this very question. Written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman, the play won a Pultizer prize in 1936. Set in New York, it features the quirky patriarch Martin Vanderhof and his extended clan of equally whacky characters. Vanderhof took an early retirement, and spends his time tending to his pet snake. His daughter Penelope Sycamore is a homemaker who turned aspiring author when a typewriter is accidentally delivered to their home. The household also contains Penelope's …

AACS Hosts Welcome Event for Prospective Students and Families

Admissions Director Drew Robinson and three students provided insight into the happenings of the school and how it has impacted their lives.

Approximately thirty prospective students and families, most visiting campus for the first time, attended Annapolis Area Christian School's Discover AACS, conducted by Admissions Director Drew Robison in an effort to highlight and tie together all three lower, middle and upper campuses. The Kilby Athletic Center served as the backdrop to the event located on the Burns Crossing Road upper campus. Led by Robinson and three senior students, the special program began at 9:30am and lasted one hour.
