BGE Warns Customers to be Aware of Potential Utility Imposters

Elderly and limited income customers are common targets.

BGE Spokeswoman Linda Foy said in a recent e-mail alert that while there have been no specific cases in the Severn area, the utility cautions customers to be aware of individuals posing as BGE employees seeking entry into their homes in a possible attempt to steal money and other valuables.  The BGE e-mail went on to say that occasionally scam artists call customers seeking credit card or other personal information. Many times, they indicate that they’re trying to collect payment on a past due bill and threaten to suspend service if payment isn’t made.  Residents should also know that in general, the only time a BGE representative may visit a customer’s home is in response to a gas or electric emergency, to check equipment, read meters or …

AACPD Seeks New Officers

Department holds a Dec. 10 recruitment open house at the Northern Police Station, sharing information about joining the force.

Imagine calling 9-1-1 for a police officer and being told no one is available to help. To keep this scenario from happening, the Anne Arundel County Police Department is seeking new officers. A recruitment open house was held Dec. 10 in the Northern District Station in Brooklyn Park. "People have been coming in and out. A lot of people don't want to come to a website. They want to talk to an officer, and they can't talk to a website," police recruiter Officer Takenya McGregor said the night of the open house. McGregor said some people have trouble applying for a job online but during an open house, they can walk in, fill out a paper application and ask officers questions about a job. "We have information about a job and the salary. We give…

New Law Affects Court Process for Traffic Violators

Effective Jan. 1, drivers will be given new responsibilities when receiving a payable traffic ticket.

A new Maryland state law will change the way drivers handle speeding tickets, and will alter District Court procedures by instating a mandatory request process for trial appearances. Effective on January 1, drivers who receive a payable traffic ticket will not be given an automatic trial date. Instead, drivers will have a choice of three options that must be acted upon within 30 days.   Traffic violators will be permitted to pay the full amount, ask the District Court for a waiver hearing for sentencing instead of a trial, or ask for a trial date with the District Court. "Must Appear" offenses, such as driving while under the influence of alcohol of drugs, will not be affected by the new law. For those who opt to pay the fine, current …

Recent reports of theft over the past several months have caused the Anne Arundel County Police Department to release photos of a woman possibly linked to stealing personal belongings from parked vehicles in parking lots in the area.  The Police are attempting to identify the female who may be involved in the theft and use of credit cards throughout Anne Arundel County in towns like Pasadena, Crofton and Glen Burnie.  "We don't know if these are forced entries or not," said AACPD PIO Justin Mulcahey.
