County Firefighters, Police Commemorate September 11

About 80 people gathered at the 9/11 Memorial in front of the police and fire department headquarters in Millersville to observe a moment of silence.

Firefighters, police officers and citizens from around Anne Arundel County stood in the shadow of the 9/11 memorial in Millersville to pay their respects on Tuesday morning. Fire Division Chief Michael Cox's radio crackled at 8:50 a.m. and a woman's voice asked for a moment of silence to honor all those who gave their lives on September 11.  The crowd of about 80 people bowed their heads. Rev. Linda Schlicht, the fire department's chaplain, lead the crowd in prayer and asked for blessings upon "the families who have been left behind" and "all of those who are our first responders in fire and law enforcement." County Executive John R. Leopold reminded those gathered that Maryland lost 68 of its own people on that tragic day 11 years ago, …

On September 11, Details Linger

Eleven years ago, I threw on a old grey shirt, ran out the door and knew world was not the same.

When we recall the events of September 11, we often thing back to the magnitude of it all. But it is the small details that somehow linger in our minds. How is it that 11 years later, I remember precisely the shirt I wore that day? It was an odd grey dress shirt, darker on the inside than the outside. It wasn’t ironed. I didn’t have time to bother that morning.  Katie Couric first told us that it seemed like a small commuter plane had struck one of the buildings. It wasn’t a terrorist attack at that point, but just a bizarre accident of some kind. It was a clear, blue day. What happened? Then the second plane hit. I threw the shirt on, rolled up the sleeves, jumped into a pair of jeans and went out the door of my apartment in Silver Spring…

You're so right! I remember all those little details like they were yesterday, including those same stories about the car bomb and USA Today (because I had worked at USAT until a year before). We weren't allowed to have Internet access at work so everything came via radio or phone calls. I can't remember what I did yesterday but clearly remember 9/11/01.   more ›

Officials to Observe 'Moment of Silence' for September 11

The county executive and public safety personnel will pay tribute Tuesday morning at the 9/11 memorial at the Police and Fire Department Headquarters in Millersville.

The county's 9/11 memorial located at the Police and Fire Department Headquarters in Millersville offers residents a local place to reflect on the attacks that took place on Sept. 11, 2001. On Tuesday morning, County Executive John R. Leopold encourages the public to join him at the memorial at 8:50 a.m. for a moment of silence to pay tribute to the public safety personnel, victims and troops who lost their lives. “Our memorial featuring steel beams from the World Trade Center has become an important place to reflect and learn about a day that will forever live in infamy,” Leopold said in a prepared statement. “We encourage the public to pay tribute, reflect, and participate in a day of service.” The Police and Fire Department Headquarters…

Former Baltimore Resident Strikes Deal in Terror Case

Majid Khan admitted Wednesday to working with al-Qaida and will serve up to 19 years in prison.

A former Baltimore-area resident will serve up to 19 years in prison after pleading guilty in a Guantanamo Bay courtroom to terrorism charges and agreeing to cooperate on future terror investigations. Majid Khan admitted before a military commission Wednesday that he was involved in a failed plot to kill the former president of Pakistan and that he delivered money used to finance a hotel bombing in Indonesia. After living near Baltimore from 1998-2001, he fled to Pakistan shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and became involved with the terrorist group al-Qaida, according to the plea agreement. Khan will serve a maximum of 19 years in prison if he cooperates with authorities, but will not be sentenced for another four years. He …

Reflections of 9/11 in the Digital Age

Severn Patch's editor asks the question, "What if we had Facebook and Twitter during Sept. 11, 2001?"

Social media was created to make our lives better—to connect us.  As I watched the television coverage surrounding the 9/11 memorial ceremonies in New York, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, PA, I was not only flooded with emotions and memories; I was flooded with a sense of connection.  Social media connected us in a unique way Sunday. It didn't just tell us where our friends were eating lunch or what football team to root for, it offered us glimpses into the memories of our friends, snapshots of horrors 10 years passed.  I was taken back to places I've never been: classrooms, offices and kitchen tables—each transfixed my imagination and triggered my own memories of where I was when it happened.  As I steeped in the inter-connectivity of …

Residents Remember 9/11 at Police and Fire Headquarters

The ceremony focused on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and featured guests such as Col. Edward Rothstein of Fort Meade and County Executive John R. Leopold.

Anne Arundel County residents and officials came together Sunday morning to remember Sept. 11, 2001.  The ceremony took place at the county's Police and Fire Department headquarters in Millersville and featured appearances from County Executive John R. Leopold, Fire Chief John Ray and Fort Meade's Installation Commander Col. Edward Rothstein.  A 9/11 memorial of steel beams from the World Trade Center already stood on the lawn of the Police Department, but Sunday's ceremony saw new additions to the memorial. An additional plaque was placed on the lawn along with the beams commemorating the men and women who served on 9/11.

'Heroes' Runners Cross Finish Line After 185-Mile Trek

Odenton resident Don Snook and his brother, Chris, overcame terrible weather and injuries this week to run 185 miles on behalf of wounded veterans.

After braving heavy rains, flooded trails and cranky knees, participants in the 185 for Heroes run completed their journey Saturday, crossing the finish line in the weeklong event to raise money for wounded veterans. Odenton resident Don Snook and his brother Chris crossed the finish line on the campus of Georgetown University after logging 185 miles on foot since departing from Cumberland, MD last Sunday. They were accompanied by Don Snook’s wife Corinna, and friends Clay Anderson and Ashley Ackenhausen, who formed a bicycle support team on the journey. The team traveled essentially a marathon each day along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail, and they battled difficult conditions through most of the trip. By Wednesday, heavy flooding …
