Each of the students in the 2012 Anne Arundel Spelling Bee outspelled me as I tried to play along Saturday afternoon at the county Board of Education building. As each round grew increasingly more difficult, I grew more impressed with the young spellers. Each was giving it their all and each were disappointed when they missed that one letter, or added one that shouldn't have been there. But each received rounds of applause from the audience and even pats on the back from fellow contestants. Ultimately, Olivia Simmons of Bates Middle School in Annapolis came out on top after several entertaining rounds trading words back and forth with LeAn Nguyen of Severn River Middle School in Arnold.
