For Surge Sake, Bay Area Hopes Sandy Stays East

If the "Frankenstorm" turns west at the Chesapeake Bay, storm surges would rise.

Residents along the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland are hoping the Frankenstorm starts its trick-or-treating to the east—and stays there. A westerly turn for the storm could prove catostrophic, as the counterclockwise rotation of Hurricane Sandy would pull water into the Bay, creating destructive storm surges for the waterfront communities. But if the storm stays to the east—as projection models early Saturday are beginning to favor—the Bay communities could be spared, while ocean-front communities along the East Coast could be hammered. » Follow Maryland Patch on Facebook for constant statewide updates on the Frankenstorm. In many early models, Havre de Grace would be under the eye of the storm at some point or another. "It looks right now …

Letter to the Editor: BGE Urges Customers to Plan for Outages

A Baltimore Gas & Electric official shares tips on preparing for Hurricane Sandy.

Editor's Note: The following letter to the editor is from Jeannette M. Mills, Baltimore Gas & Electric's vice president of customer operations and chief customer officer, encourages residents to actively prepare for impending storms and anticipated power outages. While the exact path of Hurricane Sandy continues to fluctuate, as soon as it became apparent there could be a possible East Coast landfall, BGE began the process of pre-mobilizing employees, calling in assistance from out-of-state crews and preparing for a hurricane impact. This is expected to be a very dangerous storm with high winds, heavy rain and possible flooding – all of which can cause whole trees, tree limbs and water to damage our electric equipment, resulting in outages…

Anne Arundel County Football Roundup: Week 9

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, see how the Anne Arundel County football teams fair.

High school football teams in Anne Arundel County will begin their ninth week of play on Friday night. Patch has rounded up the records and schedules for each team and produced some power rankings. Much like last week, Arundel, Old Mill, Broadneck, and South River would clinch playoff spots for the Class 4A East Region if the season ended today, according to the MPSSAA website. However, despite having just two weeks of play left, there are a few key matchups remaining. Here's a look at what's ahead for the whole county. 1. Arundel (8-0): The Wildcats still rank the highest in the county and in the 4A East Region in terms of wins—and will most likely stay that way. In its two remaining games, Arundel will host Chesapeake (5-3) on Friday and…

iPod Day—What's in Odenton and Severn's Playlist?

Eleven years ago today, the Apple iPod was introduced. If Odenton had a playlist, what would it contain?

Did you know that Oct. 23 was iPod day?  Apparently, Apple introduced the first iPod music device on that day in 2001. And now millions of Americans use the device to listen to their music each day.  We all have favorite playlists. Mine contains an unhealthy amount of pop music from the 1980s, plus some kids songs mixed in. (Depeche Mode and Old McDonald make for an interesting mix.) If the town of Odenton were to create its own playlist, what would it look like? Here are a few suggestions.  The Bangles - Manic Monday — A special ode to the thousands that hop on the MARC train to Washington each morning. Kenny Rogers - The Gambler — Whistle this one while playing the slots at Maryland Live!  Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me — We're just a…

Obama-Romney Final Presidential Debate: Who Won?

The third presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney focused on foreign policy. Who dominated? We want to know what Maryland thinks.

After President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney sparred aggressively last week, the candidates dug into foreign policy at Monday night's third and final presidential debate. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. The two candidates had extensive exchanges on Iran and Syria, and the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Obama responded to a charge by Romney that the Navy had fewer ships than it did in 1916. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” said Obama. Whom do you think won the debate? Tell us in comments. -- TV Channels Broadcasting Live: ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, CNN, …

Anne Arundel County Football Roundup: Week 8

Arundel remains the only undefeated team in the county.

High school football teams in Anne Arundel County will begin their eighth week of play on Thursday night. Patch has rounded up the records and schedules for each team and produced some power rankings. According to the MPSSAA website, Arundel, Old Mill, Broadneck, and South River would clinch playoff spots for the Class 4A East Region if the season ended today. The MPSSAA rankings are based on a formula weighing the strength of victory and opponents. But there's still a lot of football left to play. Let's look at what's ahead for the whole county. 1. Arundel (7-0): Arundel sits atop in the county and in the 4A East region by more than two full points. The Wildcats take on fellow 4A East opponent Severna Park Thursday night. Arundel has …

Reader Poll: Congressional Redistricting

How will you vote on the Congressional redistricting plan on Nov. 6?

In addition to more notable referendum questions such as same-sex marriage, DREAM Act and expanded gambling, Maryland voters will also be asked to decide the fate of the state's recently redrawn congressional districts. Earlier this week, Comptroller Peter Franchot announced he intends to vote against the maps and asked voters to do the same. The comptroller said the recent maps drawn by Gov. Martin O'Malley and approved by the General Assembly are unfair and make Maryland "the poster child for gerrymandering." A spokeswoman for the governor noted that the maps have survived a number of challenges in the courts and that the process used to create them is legally sound. Voters on Nov. 6 will be asked to vote for the referred law or against …

How can there be so many jerks in this state? This was not about Dems vs Reps, it was about disenfranchisement and too much power in the hands of people we didn't vote for! Very disappointed. It's an embarrassment being "the most gerrymandered state in the US". It's time for an amendment instituting term limits for MD legislators!   more ›

POLL: What Should Be Done With the Roundabout Monument?

After the Piney Orchard roundabout monument was damaged again by an errant driver, should the community rebuild it?

Residents of Piney Orchard were once again surprised to find the roundabout monument heavily damaged by a vehicle gone awry.  It is the third time that the monument has been struck in the last two years, and the second time it's been damaged this severely. The last time the monument was knocked over in February of 2011, the community was eventually able to rebuild it using funds from the insurance company of the driver at fault. Presumably, that could happen again. But should Piney Orchard bother? Some members of the community have suggested finding something else to put in the roundabout instead. Others said eliminating the traffic circle altogether may be the best option. What do you think? Should Piney Orchard rebuild the monument …

Anne Arundel County Football Roundup: Week 7

The Arundel Wildcats are the only undefeated team left in the county. They take on Broadneck this week.

High school football teams in Anne Arundel County will begin their seventh week of play on Friday night. Patch has rounded up the records and schedules for each team and produced some power rankings. Arundel now stands alone at the top. 1. Arundel (6-0): The Wildcats took down rival and defending state champ Old Mill last Friday, 66-34. This week Arundel will host Broadneck (5-1). Quarterback Jack Gordon was 20-30-1, with five touchdowns against the Patriots. Broadneck gave up 21 points last week to an inferior Annapolis team—expect Arundel to come out on top in this matchup. 2. Old Mill (5-1): After falling to Arundel last week, the Patriots head to Annapolis, who is winless this season. Quarterback Brady Ludwig threw for two  touchdowns …

VIDEO: Orioles Fan Flies In From Miami For Game 2

Brandon Davis and his mom, Edye Stewart, were at Oriole Park at Camden Yards Monday.

Brandon Davis decided he could do without some of his musical equipment. What he couldn't do without: experiencing an Orioles playoff game. So the Anne Arundel County native—a 2002 South River High School grad—hocked some of his personal items from his Miami residence in order to catch a flight and land a ticket to see the Orioles play in Game 2 of the American League Division Series Monday in Baltimore. Davis, 29, and his mother, Edye Stewart, sat about 10 rows off the field along the right field line as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3-2. See the video for more from Stewart and Davis. Davis is retired from the military. Monday was his first game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards since the 1997 season. The Orioles carried a similar …
