Who’s NOT planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party. 1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try…
Organizers are close to achieving funding for a health and community center to serve underprivileged residents of Severn
For Glenda Gathers, it all started back in the 1980s when she was just another a pesky neighbor in Severn. Crime, drugs and teen pregnancy were dragging the neighborhood down, and she didn’t like that kids were hanging around on her street. “Every summer, there was just nothing to do,” she said. Over time, she became one of the most vocal activists in the Severn community, garnering the nickname “Ms. G.” And after nearly 30 years, her dream of getting a community center to serve nearby residents is coming close to fruition. “I am so excited,” the Still Meadows resident said. “I’m just bursting inside. I can’t wait to walk into it.” There is still some work to be done, but People’s Community Health Center is close to raising the funds …
A Sun reviewer compared a recent visit with his experience shortly after the casino opened last year.
In a review in The Baltimore Sun Wednesday, writer Wesley Case recognized what he called the "crowded and energized floor" on a recent Friday night visit to the Maryland Live! Casino. Table games went live at the casino in April, after voters approved changes to gambling laws on the November ballot. Case wrote that the casino "appeared to be reaping the benefits of democracy." Case wrote he had wondered when the casino opened in November if the traffic would pickup and the facility would remain sustainable. In his review today, he praised the new music venue—Rams Head Center Stage—and the casino's active atmosphere since the addition of table games. "You wouldn't mistake the casino, which opened last June and introduced live table games on…

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. Keep an eye on local traffic conditions on our commute page. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer …

Ali Ibrahim was named a Carson Scholar for his essay outlining how he is collecting bicycles to donate to people Uganda
Ali Ibrahim recently realized that he had too many bicycles on his hands. But he knew there were people in other parts of the world whose lives would be changed if they had one. The fourth grader at Odenton Elementary School decided to collect more bicycles with the intent to ship and donate them to young people in the African nation of Uganda. Then he wrote about the experience in an essay, and ended up winning a $1,000 college scholarship. Ali was named a Carson Scholar, which goes to children in grades 4-11 who show good academics and a willingness to serve. The scholarship was founded by noted neurosurgeon Ben Carson. To win the scholarship, applicants had to write an essay on the question, "What sets you apart from others?" For …

Great example of community activism and of a "mature" citizen trying to accomplish something positive for the youth! Also an example that perseverance can pay off.   more ›
