I attended about 7 appointments faithfully, under the impression that the visits would be completely covered by my insurance. In fact, they assured me of this at my first visit. And then it was like Ginger tried to cram as many visits as possible as soon as possible.
The problem was that they were coding my (short--5 minutes, maybe, and useless?) visits as "physical therapy" instead of "chiropractic," which earns them a larger paycheck. While my insurance does cover chiropractic care completely (which was what I thought I was receiving), there is a $25 copay for each PT visit. Pellerin should have made me aware that they were coding my visits differently than chiropractic so I could have gotten clarification from my insurance.
After 7 visits, I was made aware that I did in fact owe them $165 in copays not covered by insurance. This amount of money hurts us dearly, as I am a stay at home mom with 2 babies, and my husband works very hard to make ends meet.
My husband, who is in health insurance policy research, sent a letter suggesting they clarify their coding procedures (and therefore, what will be covered by insurance) to future patients. We received no response, just the bill.
My mother (a real healthcare professional) warned me that chiropractors are only in it for the money, and now I have experience with a sneaky chiropractic practice that I intend to warn people against.
This is bad business in our book and we will remain wary of chiropractic "care" in the future.
