Local School Improvements Included in Capital Budget

Several schools in west Anne Arundel County would get money for everything from kindergarten additions to HVAC upgrades under the capital budget proposed last month.

Next week, the Anne Arundel County Board of Education will hold two public hearings to discuss the proposed operating and capital budgets for fiscal year 2014.

The proposal from Superintendent Kevin Maxwell calls for more than $1 billion in operating expenses and a capital budget of about $240 million.

The capital budget includes requests to fund expansion and renovation projects at many schools, including several in west Anne Arundel County.

Those local schools include:

  • Crofton Elementary - $15 million for revitalization.
  • Crofton Meadows Elementary -  $1.2 million for kindgergarten addition.
  • Manor View Elementary - $2.6 million for feasability studies and design work on renovations.
  • Waugh Chapel Elementary - $1.25 million for HVAC system improvements.
  • Four Seasons Elementary - $1.33 million toward kindergarten addition.
  • Crofton Middle - $2.3 million toward an addition.
  • Meade High - $4.6 million toward HVAC system upgrades.

In most cases, the proposed spending represents a portion of the total cost of the projects. Other funds have either been spent in previous years or are expected to be included in later years.

A review of the six-year capital plan for the county schools shows other money proposed for capital projects between 2015 and 2019. Local schools potentially eyed for those funds include both Old Mill middle schools, Old Mill High School and Quarterfield Elementary School.

Public hearings on the budget will be held on Jan. 8 and Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. at Old Mill High School. The school board will vote on the adoption of the budget request in on Feb. 20. The county executive and County Council may then amend or accept the budget before final approval in June.
