A cell phone tower could be placed at the Center of Applied Technology North under a plan to be presented next month.

Milestone Communications wants to place a tower in the corner of the property at CAT North in Severn, under an agreement with Anne Arundel County Public Schools. The cell tower would be designed to address a gap in coverage for AT&T customers.

The company will present its plans on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the North County Area Library.

According to a meeting notice, the tower would be 130 feet tall and located at the north/northeast corner of the school. The ground equipment related to the pole would be locked in a 50-by-50-foot compound.

This is not the first cell tower proposed on school property. Poles have also been proposed for Annapolis Middle School and Broadneck High.

Milestone was also looking to place a cell tower on the property of Piney Orchard Elementary School, but eventually withdrew the plans, citing an inability to find a location that complied with zoning rules. Many parents of Piney Orchard students strongly opposed any effort to place a cell tower on school property.

The Anne Arundel County Council discussed a bill that would have restricted the construction of cell phones on school grounds, but the measure did not pass.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools signed a master lease agreement with Milestone last year outlining how revenue from towers would be split. However, each individual project still must go through a review process.

Milestone has created a website outlining details of the proposed project at catnorthwireless.com.
