Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-2nd District) has decided not to enter the race for Maryland governor.

The congressman said he will instead seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

"I want to thank the many Marylanders who encouraged me to run for governor," Ruppersberger said in a statement. "I was humbled by their enthusiasm, faith, and financial commitments. Their encouragement and confidence made me think long and hard about this choice."

There was considerable speculation that Ruppersberger would run for governor, as his role as ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee boosted his profile in the state and nationally. But if he were to enter, he would have faced stiff competition in the primary from Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler, who have already raised considerable money and scored key endorsements.

Ruppersberger said he would continue his work in Congress on issues affecting national security and veterans. He also said he hoped the recent budget deal would lead to more bipartisan cooperation on Capitol Hill.

"I hope the recent bipartisan budget deal can be a first step toward compromise on larger issues such as tax and entitlement reform as well as long-term deficit reduction," he said. "I will ask Second District voters to allow me to continue my work on these and other critical issues facing our nation, and to be a strong voice for the people I am honored to represent."
