County Swaps Bonds for Grants on WB&A Trail

Efforts to extend the WB&A Trail were boosted by a $400,000 state grant, but an equivalent amount of bond money was transferred to pay for turf fields in the county.

A grant from the Maryland Bikeways Program has allowed the county to free up $400,000 to go toward turf fields in Anne Arundel.

The grant will go to support the extension of the WB&A Trail from Odenton into Prince George's County, but freed up $400,000 in bonds that can be used for other purposes.

The county council on Monday approved a transfer of the money to the Turf Fields in Regional Parks project.

The turf fields project calls for two new turf fields to be installed at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville and for two new fields in North County. Originally, $1.6 million was set aside for the project, but new funds were needed for additional site work.

In addition to the $400,000 transferred from the WB&A Trail project, the turf fields project also got $100,000 in bond premium that had been set aside for a new Eastern District police station, but was no longer needed. Another $150,000 was taken from bonds previously earmarked for new fire department pagers, which were also no longer needed.

County agencies could request additional money for the WB&A Trail in the FY2015 budget. Officials have been working to close a gap in the trail between southern Odenton and Prince George's County.

That is ridiculous. With so many cycling proposals on the table, as well as a failing traffic infrastructure, there's no reason to be undercutting or diverting funds intended specifically for it. In September there were meetings to address transportation input from the County; the highlights of each meeting included pedestrianization, mass transit, and bikes. Heck, even moving money to build sidewalks in places like Monterey, King Malcom, or Bruce Ave would have been SOMEthing. (you know, the roads that lead directly to the Elementary school through those residential bits of town)
