Update: Teen Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle Near Parkway

The 15-year-old was rushed to a Laurel hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Updated: (1:04 p.m.) - A teenage boy was killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking on a road near the Russett community Thursday morning.

Division Chief Keith Swindle, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said the incident happened just before 6 a.m. near Route 198 and Russett Green East in Laurel.

The teen was transported to Laurel Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The Anne Arundel County Police Department confirmed that he later died. He was identified as Jaelin Ashe of Carriage Walk Lane in Laurel.

An investigation revealed that the teen was struck by a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro while trying to cross the road and was struck by a car traveling east on Route 198. Police said the teen crossed against the signal warning pedestrians not to cross.

Investigation into the accident forced the closure of lanes on the Baltimore Washington Parkway for part of Thursday morning.

I'm sorry for the teen and his/her family. The dark and running across highways are nothing to be taken lightly. Those signals and marked crosswalks are there for a reason. It is a lot harder to judge speed coming toward you in the dark ... for goodness sake, wait for the light!

How about the school board adjust the school times with the changing of the times. Our children don't need to be out on any corner in the dark waiting for buses or trying to cross streets to get there. Drivers are so reckless and speed often. As family and friends we need to really be in prayer our children are falling right before our eyes. Another bright young man with great potential has been taken away. May God be with the Ashe family and all the students of Meade High School who has lost another brother and friend. May the peace of God rest rule and abide with all who are morning and may they look to Him for stregnth and comfort during their time of need.

On the surface, your suggestion sounds like a good one, but it's not that simple. School buses generally do double duty--picking up and dropping off two or more groups of children at other schools. Many parents would need to change their commute to work, some would need to change daycare schedules for their younger children and many other complications would be involved in such a change. It's never a good time to blame the victim, but had this youngster followed procedures for safe crossing, we would not be having this conversation. His death is a tragedy for him, his family and friends. I can only imagine how horrible the drivers who struck him must feel. Most of us would hate to even injure an animal with our vehicles, much less a human being.

to weqdfds: It's bad enough that you hijacked a story to post links to ads, but even worse, because this story was about a teen who was killed. Are you some kind of sub-human?

He/she has tacked this post onto several older stories on Patch. It's annoying as heck because if you've previously commented on that story, then you get an email notifying of an additional comment. What a waste of everyone's time; I can't imagine anyone actually clicking on any of those links.
