Police: Teen Assaulted, Robbed at Arundel Mills

The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on Black Friday outside the mall.

A 14-year-old boy told police he was assaulted and robbed as he left the Bed Bath and Beyond store at Arundel Mills mall in Hanover early Friday morning.

According to Anne Arundel County police, the teen said he was approached by five suspects just after 2 a.m. Friday in the parking lot.

He told police he was punched and robbed of his shopping bag. Police contacted the parents of the teen, who suffered a minor injury but refused medical treatment on the scene.

The suspects, all male and between the ages of 17 and 21, reportedly fled on foot towards the Bass Pro store and officers were unable to locate them.

14 year-old boy? Bed, Bath and Beyond? 2 a.m.? Does not compute.

The blog at aacowired captured my sentiments on this robbery completely

@J. Hanks I read your post and agree somewhat, but to prevent what occurred this morning (yes, this morning) I proposed the radical idea that parents do the right thing by their children. A 14 year-old out alone at 2 a.m. In a place known for this sort of thing? He should have been in bed. End of story.
Pat Gardner November 23, 2012 at 04:33 PM
Agreed - no 14 yr old should be out at 2 AM. He was asking for trouble. Parents fault.

I love how people blame the parents instead of the criminals without knowing the full story. The article doesn't say he was alone. He could have been shopping with other family members who were adults, an older adult sibling, etc.

@Alan "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I love how people make excuses for poor parenting.

So if it was an 18 year old that got robbed then you'd be outraged? I get it since the kid was 14 we should worry more about that..... Double D shakes his head at the ignorance of some people.

and the other "youths" SHOULD have been out at that hour? This BLACK FRIDAY nonsense is ridiculous. Can we just stop it already? There is NO reason that a retail venue needs to be open in the middle of the damned night.
J. Hanks November 24, 2012 at 01:35 PM
@number9dream - I would agree with you if I believed that if all 14 years old's were in bed then nobody would have been robbed. However, in my mind we would have just had a different victim, not a 14 year old boy, probably someones mom, aunt or sister. Which of course is no better. This was a pack of thugs looking for a victim - don't believe for a second that they weren't going to rob someone that night...
J. Hanks November 24, 2012 at 01:36 PM
Parents fault, not the thugs who robbed him? You're a moron.
J. Hanks November 24, 2012 at 01:37 PM
I love how people make excuses for violent thugs

Such a shame that this happened to this young man. Happy holidays huh? Arundel Mills was ruined a long time ago because of roaming groups of thugs looking to mug people and steal merchandise. I do not go there after dark. It's not worth the risk.
Karann November 24, 2012 at 03:47 PM
I agree with Calique retail establishments have NO business being open so late. These late hours are unfair to employees and seem like invitations for violence
Greg G. November 25, 2012 at 04:39 AM
No external video surveillance in an area known for violent crime? WTF? is all I can say. Maybe the child was trying to surprise his Mom with a nice gift and snuck out. We don't know. I think it should be mandatory to have cameras running in all parking lots and shopping areas. They will mount cameras all over the roads if it will net them some extra cash claiming it is to reduce speeding and accidents. Mount cameras that will actually do some good and protect people or at least apprehend these thugs. Priorities in HoCo and Anne Arundel are bass ackwards.
Calique November 25, 2012 at 04:14 PM
I know, right? I won't go to Arundel Mills after dark even at 6pm, let alone in the middle of the night when normal people are home asleep. If I am shopping in the middle of the night, it's on Amazon.com!!!!
Al W November 26, 2012 at 08:20 PM
I love how people blame the parents of this poor kid for getting himself robbed without knowing all the facts. Additionally, I love how someone is somehow not normal for being out shopping the "late" when the stores were open for that purpose. I have a scenario for you. Quite a few thousand Department of defense folks who live in that area are up at that hour. Why? They are WORKING defending your freedom to sleep soundly with the other "normal" people. Let's say this kid was out shopping with his entire family because that is a way for his family to spend time together. Lets say that he at 14 was responsible enough to be shopping alone and headed to the car where the rest of his family was waiting. As Greg said, we don't know as there were no more details. BTW, the McDonalds in the area is 24/7 and now thanks to some short sighted voters, the Casino is 24/7 as well. The new normal IS 2am....get used to it. Blame the thugs; not the kids parents.
