Police: Kayaker Allegedly Lied, He Shot Himself

A Virginia kayaker originally told police he was shot while on an Anne Arundel creek. New evidence shows he may have lied and actually shot himself.

Police with the Department of Natural Resources say a Reston, VA, man lied about being shot by someone on shore while he was in a kayak on Bodkin Creek, according to CBS Baltimore.

David E. Seafolk-Kobb, 56, of Reston claimed he had been out stargazing in his kayak on April 12, according to a previous Patch story. Seafolk-Kobb told police that he was on the water when he saw a red dot on his stomach, like a laser pointer, and soon after felt a sharp pain. He did not make it to shore until 10:30 a.m. the next day and was discovered by a homeowner.

Seafolk-Kopp was treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for the wound, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Candy Thomson, a spokeswoman for the Natural Resources Police told the newspaper recently that Seafolk-Kopp had stopped cooperating with the police.

“He was just done talking to us,” Thomson told the Baltimore Sun. “He wouldn’t answer any of our requests for information.”

Tests for gunpowder on Seafolk-Kopp’s hands came back positive, according to WBAL-TV. The results allowed police to obtain a warrant to search his home.

The Baltimore Sun reports that when Fairfax County police officers arrived at Seafolk-Kopp’s home on June 5, gunshots were heard from inside. Seafolk-Kopp was found with gunshot wounds -- believed to be self-inflicted -- to his face and torso.

CBS Baltimore reports that Seafolk-Kopp is currently in the hospital in critical condition.

“We’re fairly confident now that we are closing in on the answer,” Thomson told The Baltimore Sun. “We’re confident there is no other shooter.”
