An Anne Arundel County jury found James Lawyer Sr., 62, of Annapolis guilty of child abuse and rape.
Lawyer abused a girl at a Glen Burnie residence over a three-year period, beginning when the child was 5 years old, according to WBAL-TV. The victim came forward last year at age 21.
“This case reminds us that most child sexual offenders prey upon children that they know,” State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess told WBAL-TV. “It also serves as an important reminder to parents and caregivers to have a conversation with their children even at a young age, of what is appropriate touching and that even a person they know and trust needs to obey those boundaries.”
According to Leitess, Lawyer Sr. was found guilty of child abuse, two counts of second-degree sex offense, three counts of third-degree sex offense and second-degree rape of a young girl, WBAL-TV reports. His sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 25.
