Waugh Chapel Elementary Gets New Playground Map

An Arundel High student took time this summer to paint a map of the United States on the playground at Waugh Chapel Elementary.

I stopped by on Friday morning to meet the school's new principal, Amanda Edmonds, and she took some time to show me one of the nice new additions at the school.

On the blacktop behind the school is a new map of the United States, painted by a former student.

Jennifer Hewitt, who attended Waugh Chapel Elementary and now goes to Arundel High, took time during the summer to paint the nicely detailed map, which is located right alongside the school's new playground.

You may recall that got a by students last year.

It's also worth noting that Waugh Chapel Elementary got some recent upgrades to the garden area in front of the school, and organized a garden project to improve the look of their school.

Do you know of any other school beautification projects? Let us know and share some photos.

Looks like vandalism to me. Did the student have permission? Are others allowed to come onto school property and paint, tag, or such? Was the color scheme approved? I have a paintbrush in hand. What are my limitations?
Just want to make sure all laws and polices where complied with.

Wow, you even criticize people for doing good things for the community. Does it ever end with you?

Matt--Ronald is looking for our responses to his comments. Let's not encourage him and give the attention he seeks.
Jennifer--well done! A nice addition to the school, and it's good to hear about the good works teens can accomplish.

I understand Lisa.....and have to agree with you in that it is a nice addition to the school.

Actually Ronald, she did have permission. It had been approved through the previous Principal who retired this past June. This was Jennifer's Gold Award Project for Girl Scouts. It took hours of planning and preparation, not to mention hours to complete. Everyone is quite pleased with the results and very appreciative of her efforts. She gave her time and energy to a deserving school that obviously played a huge role in her younger years. Great job, Jennifer! You did a fabulous job!

Great addition to the school.

Wonderful job by Jennifer. FYI - I just added a link to our previous story about the map painted at Odenton Elementary, which was also done by some Girl Scouts.
When I was in elementary school, some students added a similar map of the U.S. and it was really cool to have. I love how she included Alaska. That's a big state!

Ron, do you ever think before spout forth your blather? Lisa has you pegged correctly for behaving as an internet troll (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)). The topic doesn't apparently matter. Kudos to Jennifer Hewitt and Principal Edmonds on this new addition to the Waugh Chapel Elementary school yard. Nice job.

Kudos to Jennifer and her entire family (mom, dad and two sisters) for planning and executing this Gold Award project for Waugh Chapel Elementary! It was a great day of painting for all of us who helped! Thanks to Carianne Powers and Christian Hodges for their help as well, all on a very hot day!!

An awesome job on the map! And yes, the Ronald guy was just a useless troll. And finally, how about Maryland painted as a 'red' state? Don't I wish...

Thanks for the kind comments. Jennifer, her friends, and her sisters worked very hard on this project. We are very proud of her. Mom and Dad
