What's With This Fro-Yo Craze?

Have you tried any of the new frozen yogurt places around town? Do you have a favorite?

The biggest thing in the area these days (aside from complaining about traffic) is frozen yogurt.

All throughout west Anne Arundel County we've seen new shops open up offering frozen yogurt treats with toppings. In most cases, it's self-serve and pay-by-the-pound.

In Piney Orchard, there's the new Tutti Frutti store.

At the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre, there's a Yolavie (French for "Yo, the Life.")

Near Arundel Mills, there's a Yogi Castle and Yogurt Mountain, and there's even a Pinkberry at BWI Airport.

Ironically, there is no TCBY nearby, and the popular Red Mango hasn't set up shop in the area yet. Sweet Frog has a store in the county, but it's down in Edgewater.

I have not been to all of these stores, but at first glance, I have a hard time figuring out how they are different from one another. I am also curious as to why frozen yogurt seems to be the big thing once again.

Patch blogger Tammy Estes recently wrote a review of Tutti Frutti, and described it as "not fabulous but not lousy."

Have you tried any of the new frozen yogurt shops in the area? What do you think of them? Leave your comments below.

We've been to most of the shops in the area. I'm addicted to ice cream, so this lets me indulge a little without killing myself slowly. Yolavie is OK, but maybe a bit *too* fancy for a yogurt place. I get the feeling it's being treated more like a fancy gym or a health food boutique. I just can't seem to relax in there. Tutti Frutti's yogurt had a better taste in my opinion. Not sure what the difference is there, but it's also less expensive. Our favorite place in the county is still Menchi's in Annapolis. It opened in the new Towne Center there about two years ago.

Yolavie is decent but as said above a little on the fancy side and seating isn't all that great. Sweet Frog is one of my favorites when they have the tart and watermelon in on the same day as that is my favorite combo but typically I just go with the tart everywhere as the watermelon isn't that common in the winter months. Yogi Castle is pretty good and it has a good amount of seating and they have discounts with Chipotle with your receipt. I have yet to try Tutti Fruiti as I just heard it opened over by Piney Orchard but it took so long to open I had kinda forgot about it. The best frozen yogurt I have had to date is at the Cherry Hill Mall in New Jersey at a place called "Red Mango" so keep your eyes out and hopefully we will see one down here. My entire family loves frozen yogurt and we treat our selves almost every week.

I haven't been to any of those places however a new place in Millersville opened up near the intersection of Generals Hwy & Old Mill. I think its called True Love but they are pretty good.

We really like the Yogi Castle near Arundel Mills. They give a 5% (I think) discount with a Chipotle or Pot Belly receipt and they additionally offer a military ID discount (the guy lets us use both discounts at the same time!) One time, their cash registers went down and instead of making us wait while they tried to fix it, they just let us have our yogurt for free! Good customer service, and kept clean and tidy. The staff there is great, a large variety of flavors, and toppings ranging from fruit (healthy!) to crushed candy bars (not so healthy!) We popped in to the Tutti Frutti up by Maiwand and Starbucks once to compare, but they had about 1/2 the yogurt machines and about 1/2 the toppings so we just went back to Yogi's.

I fully agree with Calique about Yogi's. They are a pleasure to work with and always more then courteous. It is honestly a very enjoyable experience to deal with such a wonderful group of employees and people as they have there. We go there often as a family and even with a 3 year old son its a fun family experience.

Not to swing negative here, but what is with people eating their yogurt and/or toppings while constructing their sundae, and before paying? If it hasn't been weighed yet, and you eat it, you are stealing!!! The staff is too nice to say anything, but people, really, have some sense, pride, and MANNERS!! I am NOT referring to asking for a tasting spoon... I am talking about eating from your container before reaching the register.

Sadly I have seen people do the same and feel the same way about it that you do. My 3 year old even knows better but you have grown adults doing it. I have a method for my madness as I like to put kiwi's and the "Popping pearls" (strawberry and mango) at the bottom and then put the foryo on top. Just a little tid bit for something for people to try out.

I love froyo! I noticed it was coming back in DC when I lived there a few years ago and I'm really happy that it's come to AA County. Personally, I'm also glad that TCBY isn't here...I mean, who does frozen yogurt and doesn't offer original flavor?! TCBY, that's who.

Oh, oh...The places I've tried in the area: The place inside Books-a-million in Arundel Mills and Yogi's. I have to agree with the above comments re: Yogi's...it was my favorite in the area. That may change though, now that Tutti Frutti is right near my house! I've been to a Tutti Frutti in Columbia.

My family is a fan. I especially love the self serve concept with big cups so I can try a few different flavors and it allows me to keep my costs reasonable by not over-doing it. I hope these places last.

My family loves the new Yolavie in Waugh Chapel. The staff is wonderful. My son has nut allergies and the first time we went they asked if anyone had any food allergies. The girl suggested they pull my sons toppings from the back. Now everytime he goes they are all too happy to do this for him. People must be enjoying the place as they ran out of gift cards before Christmas.

I love Menchies.. I fill it to the top with different flavors,, no toppings..Usually cost $6 and then I go back for a 2nd one..this is summer as too cold in winter. Yolavie is good but Menchies still my favorite..

We are big Yolavie fans in our house. Its a good treat for us, and the staff has always been helpful and friendly. But, we also do love Menchies as well!

It seems like no one has tried PINKBERRY! It is the BEST frozen yogurt I've ever had. There are several locations the National Harbor, DuPont Circle, Georgetown, etc. Most frozen yogurts are too sweet but Pinkberry is so refreshing! All you Menchies, Yolavie, Yogi Castle, Tutti Fruiti lovers I challenge you go try the BEST! GO TRY PINKBERRY!
