Categorizing Odenton's Residents: Where Do You Fit In?

Patch is having some more fun with the recent analysis of the town's retail environment.

Earlier this week, we noted a recent study of Odenton's retail market, and highlighted a section that placed the town's residents into segments based on income, age and lifestyle choices.

About two-thirds of people fell into the "Sophisticated Squires," "Pleasant-Ville" or "Enterprising Professionals" categories.

Of course, many residents pointed out that they don't fall into any of these designations.

"None of the above," wrote loyal Patch reader Carol Barton.

What I've since learned is that there are literally dozens of categories created by ESRI, a company that analyzes various trends based on geography. (See the full list of categories here. It's fascinating.)

For the sake of discussion, we'll ignore the fact that trying to categorize and group people this way is kind of a silly exercise. No one is going to fit a designation perfectly.

But for fun, I decided to come up with some categories of my own, inspired by what we know about the local community. I also got some suggestions from residents.

Here are a few more possible categories. Do you fit any of them?

Workaholic Winos - (From Christy Lane Craven) - "These 40 somethings put in 50+ hours or more a week and enjoy unwinding with a nice glass of wine after a long day. They live in older single family homes that often need remodeling work they can neither afford or have time to schedule. Their children are grown and they have two or more dogs that listen better than aforementioned children do."

Wide-Eyed Patriots
- The may be military families, government workers or contractors who were assigned here and still trying to get the lay of the land. They range in age from 25-40. They are utterly shocked at the cost of housing. They think traffic is horrific. They're not quite used to the school system. ("Wait, the schools are on base but the county runs them?") They are friendly, hard-working and patriotic. They've been around the world and speak other languages. They are educated and smart with their money. They like to eat out at casual restaurants and go to the movies. They like to shop at Target, but enjoy Wegmans. They might own a minivan, but are just as likely to own a motorcycle.

Longtimers - These longtime residents live in some of Odenton's older communities. They remember when Piney Orchard was a field. They may have worked at the Nevamar plant. They miss the Daily Diner and can't understand why the Superfresh is gone. They may buy a lottery ticket or two at Lucky's or a sandwich at Rieve's. They have plenty of money saved up, but they'll never tell you so. They've been to Wegmans a couple of times but don't understand what all the fuss is about. They like Hunan L'Rose, Pachanga and fire department bull roasts.

Can you think of any other categories for Odenton residents?

We definitely fit into the Longtimers category more so than any of the other ones listed here or in the first part of this article. Except we haven't been to Wegmans yet. Keep meaning to get over there and check it out.
