Workforce Housing Plan Up for Review

The Odenton Town Center Plan Oversight Committee will get another look at plans for apartments on Berger Street.

A plan to build affordable housing near the corner of Annapolis Road and Berger Street will be up for another review next week.

Homes for America will present updated plans for Berger Square, a 48-unit project designed to be less expensive than many other apartment developments in the area.

The nonprofit group will present the plans at the Jan. 29 meeting of the Odenton Town Center Plan Oversight Committee.

The apartments would have income limits and be priced to be more affordable for those with community-oriented jobs such as police officers and teachers.

Also on Jan. 29, the town center committee will discuss the role of development impact fees and the role they play in funding transportation projects in the area. George Cardwell, a transportation planner in the Anne Arundel County Office of Planning and Zoning, will offer thoughts on how impact fees could be used to benefit projects in the Odenton Town Center.

The meeting of the town center committee will be held on Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Western District Police Station, 8273 Telegraph Rd., Odenton.

A copy of the full agenda of the meeting is attached.

Enough with the social engineering! Just build what the market will support.

It sounds on the surface like it should be a good thing -- "The apartments would have income limits and be priced to be more affordable for those with community-oriented jobs such as police officers and teachers. " But what I see happening in reality is a low rent apartment project full of drugs, crime and welfare recipients. Not fair? Maybe. I don't know. But that's what it seems like we'd end up with in a short amount of time.

Valid concerns all... Perhaps the Town Center Committee should request a report on numbers of Section 8 tenants currently residing in similar housing projects setup by this non-profit as well as a crime statistics report for the same:

Property values in this area are already quite low and adding a project like this is more than likely to keep them low...
