Volunteer Opportunities in West County

Looking to help a neighbor in need? Here's a roundup of local organizations that could use some assistance this week and on an ongoing basis.

Operation Military Kids

Operation Military Kids is an effort by the U.S. Army to support children who are impacted by deployment. About 150,000 kids participated each year in activities sponsored by local groups including the Girl Scouts, 4-H Youth Development and Boys and Girls Clubs. Current volunteer opportunities include activity coordinators, fundraisers, workshop facilitators and community outreach contacts. To get involved, contact Jayne Fitzgerald at jefitz@umd.edu.

Christian Assistance Program (CAP) Food Pantry

There is an ongoing need for volunteers to help with the food pantry operated by CAP, a coalition of a dozen churches in Odenton, Severn and Gambrills. The pantry is open at the Severn United Methodist Church from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesdays and 3-5 p.m. on Thursdays. Volunteers are needed to help with bagging groceries, helping with deliveries from the Maryland Food Bank and picking up food from local stores. Contact Jean McHenry at mchenrysnorth40@verizon.net.

Arundel House of Hope Winter Relief Program

Local churches will be taking in homeless people during the winter to assist the Arundel House of Hope. Churches can accommodate about 60 people and help is needed in greeting guests, serving meals and performing other tasks. Check with your local church to find out when they will be hosting the winter shelter. For more information, email Phil Bailey at pbailey@arundelhoh.com.

Adaptive Sports Programs

There is an ongoing need for help with the adaptive sports program operated by the Anne Arundel County Department of Parks and Recreation. Programs for floor hockey, basketball and other sports take place at the Ruth P. Eason Special School in Millersville and Central Special School in Edgewater. Sign up at the Volunteer Arundel webpage.

Opportunity Builders Inc.

Opportunity Builders Inc. is a vocational resource center for adults with developmental disabilities. There is an ongoing need for volunteers who can commit to coming once a week to help out. Also, on Feb. 4, the organization will hold its annual Mardi Gras fundraiser, and is seeking people to assist with games, food and music. Contact Megan Gibbs at MGibbs@obiworks.org.

These volunteer opportunities were compiled from the Volunteer Center for Anne Arundel County, church newsletters, reader submissions and other sources.
