Vehicle Crashes Into Odenton Home

The incident occurred on King Malcolm Avenue at about noon on Friday.

A black pickup truck crashed through the living room of a home Friday on King Malcolm Avenue in Odenton. No one was home during the accident.

The incident was reported to fire officials at 11:48 a.m., according to spokesman Chief Michael Cox, who said there was property damage but no injuries.

The home's resident, 81-year-old Audrey Brady, has lived there since 1965.

"I'm shaking, hyperventilating," Brady said at the scene. "If I had been home, I wouldn't be standing here."

The truck was driven by John Moxley, the manager of the Shell Station on Annapolis Road. He said the truck was in for repairs and he was giving it a test drive. He said he had made a left turn and something snapped.

"The steering gave out," Moxley said.

When asked if he had ever had that happen to a car, he said "not while I was driving."

"Thank God, no one was home," Moxley added.

Police and building inspectors were on the scene just before 1 p.m. Friday. It was not yet clear if the home was beyond repair.

There's NO way he was driving at or below the speed limit on that road, which is 25 mph. I live on Bruce Ave. which runs parrelle to this road. People are constantly flying down these streets at all hours of the day! Going faster then you should on a highway. We have no sidewalks or curbs of any sort and I have never seen any type of police intervention to reduce the number of people speeding in our neighborhood. We have asked for speed bumps, sidewalks and the closure of some "cut through" side streets in this neighborhood, with nothing being done. Thank God she wasn't home! Maybe the county will finally take notice to the hazards in this area. The is an elementary, middle and high school less then a quarter mile from this neighborhood which mean any child who lives in this neighborhood does not get county transportation to school. They walk on these sidewalk-less streets everyday. It's just sad.

I couldn't agree more about both the lack of sidewalks and the speeding in the neighborhood. My son would like to walk to and from OES, but there are no sidewalks on Monterey Ave. and cars fly up and down that road as well. I can't figure out why the county replaced existing sidewalks on less traveled streets in the neighborhood when there are no sidewalks at all on these busy roads.

I also agree with what is being said about the lack of sidewalks on Bruce Ave., King Malcolm Ave. and Monterey Ave. I do believe that if we had sidewalks in our neighborhood that people would have to slow down to avoid hitting the cars that are parked on the streets in front of the houses instead of parking in their front yard. I know that over the past 20 years we have tried without success to get the county to put sidewalks in our neighborhood, but nothing has been done. The money always seems to goes towards making improvements in the newer, more expensive neighborhoods.
I know that the driver of the truck said that something happened to the steering in the vehicle, but he didn't say that the brakes failed. I wonder if he even tried to brake, cause that doesn’t appear to be the case.
