The South River High girls soccer team won the Class 4A East regional title Tuesday night, overcoming a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat Arundel High, 3-2.

The game was won by Maddie Koenig on a penalty kick in the second overtime, sending the Seahawks on to the state final four.

Arundel took an early lead on goals by Clarissa Kirsch-Downs and Allison Shaner. But Kacie Longo scored two late goals in regulation, and Koenig secured the win for South River in the second extra period.

South River will now play Bowie in the state semifinal. The game is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Richard Montgomery High School.

All of the news of the election led our morning newsletter and was front and center all last night and for most of the morning. We'll re-feature it all again. As you probably know, we move stories in and out of that top slot all day long. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Tim,

Thanks for the coverage. It was a great game. Such ashame that the Edgewater Patch's editor Jonathan Moynihan failed to cover such a great game. The South River sports coverage really fails with the local Patch. At least we get to see all the criminals get their coverage.

Good luck Hawks!

Hi SeaHawk Follower,

I apologize for not being able to cover the game myself, but I was busy assisting fellow editors in our Election Day coverage. As a one-man news team, there's only so much I can do.

We'll have coverage of Arundel volleyball today in a playoff match against Broadneck. And we'll be at the Arundel-Meade playoff football game Friday.

Arundel Girls,
Keep your heads up, you had a great season...most of the team comes back next year and should make a run at a state championship!

You can't count on or assume the Arundel girls will be in the same position next season...injuries are a big factor. They needed to win NOW....losing big games is becoming a habit for the Arundel girls soccer team over the last several years. They consistently seem out-coached at many aspects (game preparation, making in-game adjustments, tactics, players in the wrong positions, and game management). And if you don't agree with this, ask yourself this question. When is the last time an Arundel girls soccer team advanced from their region into the state semi-finals?.....Crickets. Coaches should be measured by how well they do in the regular season AND playoffs against quality opponents. We expect the best teacher for our kids and we should expect the best coaches too. The time is long past that a history teacher with little coaching experience can trot out and coach a bunch of kids that have played high level club soccer since they were kids. The Arundel athletic department needs to hire some good coaches and put some priority into the soccer program. All they really seem to care about is football and girls basketball.
