POLL: What Part of Wegmans Excites You Most?
There's a lot of buzz about the new store that will open Oct. 28.
The new Wegmans at the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre will open in less than a month, to the delight of many area residents.
We'll admit, not everyone in the area is going to shop there. For many, the neighborhood grocery store will suit their needs just fine (and there's less traffic anyway).
But for those who do plan to shop at Wegmans, we want to know what has you most excited. For some people it may be the fresh produce. For others, it will be the selection of meat, cheese or fish.
For a rundown of what the store has to offer, check out our coverage last week featuring an interview with store manager Gerry Troisi.
Vote in our poll, and leave some comments below!

This store will fail, wait till you get a feel for the high prices and the horrible parking lot.
You will all run back to Shoppers who we all know is the low price leader in this marketplace.
Best deal in the store is the fresh Caesar Salads.
Cafe is over rated and it's by the pound, good plate of food can cost you $15.00 bucks--that's not a deal. LOL

Wegman's has comparable prices and MUCH better quality than Shoppers or Giant.

Actually, their Wegmans brands are priced amazingly low. They have their own line of spaghetti sauces that are $.99 a jar that are just as good as Prego. I shop at the Lanham one near my office all the time and I spend LESS money on groceries there! Also, their meats are similarly priced, but their expiration dates are AT LEAST a week longer than what you buy at Giant/Shoppers/Safeway.

CroftonDude - you are probably a union member/supporter.
Wegmans is consistantly less expensive than Giant/Safeway. Unbiased third party research from Consumers Checkbook has shown this to be true:
http://www.checkbook.org/interactive/spmkt/other/w/article.cfm
Compared to average prices at Giant and Safeway, the prices we found were substantially lower at Walmart Supercenter (19 percent lower than the Giant/Safeway average), Target (15 percent lower), Bottom Dollar Food (14 percent lower), Wegmans (11 percent lower), Magruder’s (10 percent lower), and Food Lion (nine percent lower). For a family that spends $150 per week at the supermarket, a nine-to-19 percent price difference might be expected to total $700 to $1,500 during the course of a year.

My Mom shops at Shoppers and I have often been with her and seen things I normally purchase elsewhere for less. Wegman's is a great family owned store. Their store brand is very affordable and is of high quality. They won't fail. Shopper's will survive too with the donuts and fried chicken. The old Giant is the one that might go under.

Wegmans prices are to high much, higher then Giant or Safeway. Someone mention that there meat has a longer shelf life date on all meat at Wegmans, well thats because it all pre-pack meat. Who would want meat setting in a gas pack tray for weeks when you can get a real meat cutter to cut a wonderful fresh steak right in front of you. For example, Safeway has the most tender and fresh meat around the busniess, The Meat cuttings are so helpful and full of knowledge when I need help. Also the customer service is great at Gaint and Safeway in Crofton where I been shopping since Safeway opened, and they always take care of me. Produce is always fresh also, never had a problem. You have to be nuts to fight all the crazy people trying to get in Wegmans, staying with Safeway.

I think their prices are extremely competitive, especially for the quality of the food.

Wegman's is amazing. Prices are comparable to every other grocery store - often better because they buy in scale. The selection of meats and organic foods is always awesome.

Is "organic" a government regulated term now?

Agree. Prices are comparable to other grocery stores. I've found lots of things cheaper (grapes, chicken, bacon, soymilk, yogurt, etc.) or similarly priced at the Columbia Wegmans than the Crofton Giant where I normally do my shopping.

Don't forget, when people started suffering from rising food prices last year Wegman's agreed to fix prices on many of their store brands to keep things affordable for people. They are not a high priced Whole Foods like people thing.

It will be great to have a decent grocery store in the area but we still need something better in Odenton. The PO Food Lion and SO Weis are pretty bad. As far as pricing at Wegmans, I've always found Harris Teeter to be less expensive than Wegmans for the items I usually shop for.

Jaimie B, from what I heard Harris Teeter may be going in where the Super Fresh closed.

cftnmom - that would be WONDERFUL if Harris Teeter took over that space. I'm looking forward to the Wegmans, but the old Super Fresh location is much closer to me and frankly I don't know how much patience I'll have for Wegmans. It seems like it's going to be a mad house. From what I've heard, the location in Columbia is still packed all the time, even though it's calmed down some from when it first opened. At least if Harris Teeter opened in Odenton, there would some competition for Wegmans and everyone wouldn't be crowding in to just one store.

Diane, the one in Lanham by my office was crazy for a couple of months but has calmed down. If you pick the right time to go, it's never bad. If you don't work weekdays, go in the morning during the week and it will be a LOT better than the weekends.

That would be awesome. I used to live across the street from the one in Columbia. They did so much to revive that village center and the community. They have the best customer service - many of the employees knew the customers by name. And yes it is still very busy. I drive back there often to do my shopping.

Speaking of Harris Teeter. I just heard on CNBC that Dolly Parton just bought all the Harris Teeter stores along with the Piggly Wiggly stores. She already owned all the Bob's Big Boys and evidently she is going to combine them into a new company.

After being without a Publix Supermarket for the past five years I am SO THRILLED to shop somewhere that has outstanding customer service, chef-employees and a selection of food that will blow our foodie socks off! Jenn in Severna Park

I'm excited to have Wegman's close to my home. I, too, live in the Odenton area and miss having a grocery store right outside my door. Even 'if" a grocery store moves into the old Super Fresh, I'll still shop Wegman's. But, now with CVS moving out of the center...who know how long that'll be? Is Fashion Bug closing?

Haven't been to a Wegman's but will probably try it once since I have friends who love it. Not sure the craziness in the store and the parking lot will be worth it. I find everything I need at Giant. I buy certain things and find Giant to be the cheapest of the grocerty stores in our area (priced items I buy routinely). Don't know how much of their store brand I would switch to since most things in our house, we like certain brands. Giant customer service has been fantastic the 11 years I've been going there.

My son will be working at the Crofton Wegman's. He trained at the Columbia store where I did my shopping when I picked him up. I spent $20 less than Giant and Safeway. Personally Shoppers is more expensive as the items are never on sale and I could usually get items less at Giant or Safeway when on sale.
