PHOTOS: Rieve's Building on the Move
The historic Rieve's building was being transported to its new home on Odenton Road on Wednesday afternoon.
The historic Rieve's Deli building was on the move Wednesday.
A special house-moving crew towed the store slowly but surely to the back of the lot near the intersection of Piney Orchard Parkway and Odenton Road.
Rieve's is being relocated to the back of the lot, in order to make way for a new Walgreens store.
The store had been lifted from its foundation and placed onto a platform with wheels. Curtis House Movers used a special tow truck and cable to move the Rieve's store inch by inch along the dirt ground.
Workers said they planned to set the Rieve's store into its new location on Thursday.
Rieve's has been operating in a temporary location on Telegraph Road while the building move is completed. Owners hope the original store will reopen in the fall, and the Walgreens could be open next door by then as well.
The Rieve's Deli is considered a historic landmark because it has been in place since the 1930s, when it was a popular drug and general store.
This is the second historic building in Odenton to be moved in recent weeks. In March, house movers transported the historic Jones House on Annapolis Road to a new location on Odenton Road, just to the west of the MARC Station.
According to those who have followed the move of the Rieve's building, the structure is more delicate than that of the Jones House.
