It's now hardly a secret that the Nevamar factory is almost completely gone, as developers get set to build a new apartment complex there.

The demolition of the former plastics plant has been going on for months, but the final heavy pieces are starting to come down.

Local history buffs Betty Horne Fowler and Veronica Salisbury were on site Monday as crews demolished the big Nevamar smokestack.

Too bad they couldn't work it into the design.

Me too . It's been done - look at the power plant in Baltimore They could have even made it a focal point in a community room - convert the bottom of the stack into a giant fireplace, much like those in English, Scottish and Irish castles. Too late now, though. Things like this makes one pause to wonder about whomever is designing these developments and condominiums these days. They apparently went through the technical classes but skipped the design classes. It would have been nice had the architects or designers or whomever w\ere responsible for this type of concept were thinking futuristic rather than industrial chic and historical preservation.

I think it's sad that so many jobs are gone to make way for more crowding and congestion in our area. It would be nice to keep the smoke stack, but even better to haves saved some jobs!!
