Local Sports Teams in Hunt for Titles

High school sports teams are entering the playoff stretch. Here's a look at how local teams are faring.

The winter high school sports season is wrapping up, with most teams either finishing up or about to enter postseason play.

In the Odenton and Severn area, there are several teams looking to compete for regional and state championships. Here’s a look at how things are shaping up for our local athletes.

Basketball

The draw for the Class 4A state tournaments will take place on Sunday. The Arundel High boys and Meade High girls will be among the teams to beat after securing county titles.

The Arundel High boys team will finish its regular season at South River on Friday. The team was unbeaten until a tough loss to Old Mill on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Meade High girls will finish their regular season Friday against Glen Burnie. They are 16-5 overall and 15-1 in the county.

Don’t forget about the Old Mill boys team, either. After the upset win over Arundel, the Patriots have won 11 straight games and could get a good draw in the playoffs. Old Mill finishes its regular season at home Friday against Chesapeake.

Wrestling

The wrestlers from Meade High qualified for the regional dual meet, before falling 31-29 to eventual champion River Hill.

The Anne Arundel County tournament will be held this weekend at Chesapeake High, with the regional tournament Feb. 24-25 and the state tournament March 2-3.

Logan Reece and Tyler Goodwin will be in the hunt for titles. Reece, a senior, is ranked second in the region by The Washington Post at 120 pounds, while Goodwin is the top-ranked wrestler at 132 pounds. Both have lost just a single bout all year.

On the private school side, Archbishop Spalding placed second in the MIAA Championships last week, placing 10 wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes.

Ice Hockey

The Archbishop Spalding boys team took home the MIAA “A” Conference title last week with a 5-2 win over Calvert Hall. The girls team will look to do the same as they face Holton Arms School of Bethesda at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel. Game time is 6:20 p.m. on Friday.
